The Scoobies and By Request: Oracle Cards

Hello, everyone.  First, I’m sharing a little silliness in the video above, with the Scoobies.  Now to the post.  Back in March, with a Flower of the Month post, I mentioned oracle cards.  Several people asked me to do a post about them.  I took a bunch of photos, but I’m only just now getting to the post.  This is going to be a light overview, limited to my own unique perspective on oracles.  I’ll eventually follow up on this post with one about tarot cards, because tarot is my personal preference.  Although that is in no way meant to be a slight to oracle cards.  Below are photos from my small collection of cards.  You’ll see that the oracles always have a theme.  There are endless versions available.

First a caution. This post might go against the “religious beliefs” of some.  If it does, then stop reading now and enjoy yourself somewhere else.  Just as with politics, even if I’m treading close to the edge of my own rules, I don’t have discussions of religion here.

Whether it’s tarot or oracle, my personal philosophy is that I do not use them for predictions or stereotypical “fortunetelling”— because the future is constantly in flux.  From moment-to-moment, the tiniest thing might change the future. So how could I (or any device I might employ) predict what is yet to happen?  Okay… granted… I’ve had premonitions that I wished had not come true, but the constant–fluxery (that’s Teaganese thank you very much) is still my take on it.  If you think otherwise, I have no gripe with you.

I use either oracle or tarot cards for a few purposes, mostly to do with gaining insight. There is a philosophical school of thought which holds that the answers to our questions are somewhere deep within us.  I tend to agree.  Many people draw a single card from a deck and study it, keeping the meaning of that card in the back of their mind throughout the day.  I might use a layout of 3 to several cards, letting the properties/meanings of the cards, or simply their artwork, guide me through my ponderating.  Personally, my “go to” is three cards.

Hmm… I see the potential for a follow-up post dedicated to card layouts…

Let me make one distinction for novices, because it can be confusing.  Oracle cards are not the same thing as tarot.  In my experience, most oracle decks stick to one theme, which usually doesn’t have anything to do with tarot.  BUT some oracle decks have some cards that correspond to the cards of tarot.  However, an oracle deck doesn’t have all 78 of the tarot cards — that would make it a tarot deck.  Oracles that are tarot-ish may also include other things, for example angels and whatnot, in the same deck. 

Yes, getting into the weeds of an explanation is confusing.  If you want to investigate oracle cards, my recommendation is to simply pick one to which you’re attracted. Don’t worry about what all it might combine.  A good deck will have a little book that discusses the deck and describes each card.

There are also decks that are neither oracle nor tarot.  One of the first decks I ever owned was the Medicine Cards (photo above) by Jamie Sams and David Carson.  I bought mine in the mid-1990s and I still have it, and if you saw it in person, you’d see that it’s “well loved.”  It provides lore from a cross-section of Native American traditions about animals.  It includes instructions for learning your totem animals, which is a wonderful exercise in introspection (but there’s an investment of time for the totems).

The Medicine Cards are unusual in that a full-sized hardback book with the lore of each animal was included.  It’s beautifully written.  There are also card lay-out diagrams which can easily be used for tarot or other readings as well as the Medicine Cards.  I mentioned that I usually prefer tarot, and these cards lend themselves well to most traditional layouts for tarot card readings.

The video above as a “flip through” of a deck that I just got, Energy Oracle Cards by Sandra Ann Taylor.  I think of this deck as a hybrid, because it uses 22 tarot cards, but as I described previously, it incorporates other themes too.  I’m quite pleased with them.  While it doesn’t show well in the video they have a gold foil edge, which seems to add light to the cards because of the reflective quality of the foil.  I’m satisfied with the artwork on most of the cards.  Some, like the “Connections” card in the video thumbnail are too photographic for my taste, but most are good.

Note that in the photos, I only used some of the cards in a given deck.  While I’ve never seen a set of oracle cards that had as many cards as a traditional tarot deck (78), they usually have plenty of cards (the ones I own have 50+ cards).  I wanted to give an idea of them without trying to show all the cards.   Thanks for reading.  Friendly comments are welcome.  Hugs!

        1. You are so kind to think of us, Jennie. ❤ Once winter finally sets in, even way down her in the southern end of the state, the winter temperatures are similar to DC or the southeast. There are plenty of nights when the lows are into the teens, and most winters a couple of nights below zero. We get from 3 to 6 snows a year, although the sun is so intense that usually it melts quickly. Of course, further north in the state winter is cooler and there is a good deal more snow. There are actually several towns with ski resorts — including down here, because of all the mountains. And, the humidity is incredibly low. That actually causes me some health issues, but it does prevent the kind of winter cold that seeps into your bones. I never thought I'd say it, but (here at least) winter is my favorite season.     1. Oooh, I think I saw those, Tiffany. They did look wonderful. Tarot is a lot more detailed than oracle cards. But you could simplify it as much as you like. One of my favorite layouts is a 3-card reading: 1) what is unknown about the situation? 2) what are the obstacles, and 3) how to proceed for best results. Thanks for reading and commenting. Hugs.

  5. I missed this post yesterday, Teagan but I saw the video on YouTube last night and it made me wonder if there was a post. I don’t know much about these cards (any variety) but I can appreciate the thought process you describe, and how they help lead you through that. I thank you for the explanation, as it helps me make some better sense of the references I see to these cards.

    The Scoobies are too cute, and they have “Cat” down perfectly. I love the way they just ignore the suggestions that they get involved. You know they’ll do that when you don’t have a camera. Good job by the bird, though.

    I don’t know any of those card sets. I have a deck of Taro that I’ve had for 40 years.

    I like the look of the Magic Flower Cards.

  7. I have to admit that I have lots of different card sets because I love cards (postcards, playing cards, baseball cards…) in general and the art in particular. That said, I do think you’re right that pulling cards from any set clarifies what you already know but maybe can’t articulate or haven’t been willing to see. I don’t see them as predictive at all. Like art, or writing, it’s what you bring to it that will determine how it speaks to you. (K)

What I appreciated most was the way you approached oracle cards with clarity, honesty, and respect. You offered a perspective that wasn’t about prediction, but about reflection and creative intuition. I think of these tools as invitations rather than answers. They give us a way to pause, to look inward, and to consider possibilities we may have overlooked. Your idea of the future being shaped moment by moment feels very close to how I see the world. We are always in motion, always reshaping our direction through choices large and small.

    1. 🙂 I should have known you would be of a like mind, Rebecca. ❤ Yes, to me readings are all about intuition. "invitations rather than answers" is a splendid way to look at it! I love that.
      The Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI) of quantum physics holds the idea that every potential choice exists in a parallel reality. So, one could imagine that at least one of our parallel selves has been through, and already has the answers to every obstacle we face.
      You're right about always being in motion. Everything, including the human body, is a mass of energy vibrating at a certain frequency. What if, when the cards are uncannily spot-on, things are vibrating at the same frequency of a similar situation with a similar us, in a parallel world? LOL, sorry. I couldn't resist playing my game of "What if?"

      1. Likewise Teagan. I think i have 8 decks at the last count.
        Only recently I started again to pull a few cards for my own guidance again.

        Its got to be at least 15 yrs now since I did anything with them properly.
        Yet at one time they were a regular go to.

        I’d not seen these particular decks before.

          Ellen Dugan’s Witches Tarot was my favorite for the last several years that I was working with them. I’ve started thinking that different artwork might be what I’m needing. The trouble is that some larger than standard size cards would be hugely helpful, and those are few and far between — especially with beautifully detailed art. I have the Gilded Tarot version published in 2004 (I got in 2017). It’s gorgeous, but at the time, the images felt too… hard-edged. But a touch of foil helps brighten any cards, so maybe I’ll take a fresh look at it. I’ve seen an updated version online that is truly striking, but… I’ve splurged enough when I bought the Kosmosky drum last month… LOL.

            1. Coincidentally, I saw an Omm tarot.
              Since I play piano by ear (if not terribly well) I had a little hope that I would be able to play the Kosmosky drum easily. But the notes are in a vastly different order.   11. I’m not sure I’ve heard of Oracle cards, so this is a good introduction. I had to laugh at the Scoobies. Clearly they’re far too busy to participate in choosing a card. Bond’s schedule is also pretty full – naps, turning over trash cans in the bathroom, chewing holes in his bag of food before I can dump it into his food bin, serenading the neighborhood when the neighbor cat visits on the screened porch. What a life.

  14. Happy to see this post, Teagan. I have Supernatural and Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV Tarot Card Sets, as well as a Supernatural TV Oracle Set. I have used them each on occasion, considering myself still very much a ‘newbie.” I enjoyed the flip-through of the Energy Oracle Cards, as well as your picture and description of the Medicine Cards as “well loved.” I plan on exploring my Tarot and Oracle sets a bit more in the future…and maybe I’ll get a glimpse of the future.😊

    1. Hi, Bruce. Oh, that’s right — I remember you mentioning those decks. A good way for a newbie to practice is a 3-card reading. That’s usually presented as “Past, Present, Future.” However, a few times I’ve seen (and it’s what I embraced and enjoy using) is 1) What is unknown about the current situation. 2) What are my obstacles. And 3) How to proceed for best results. It’s a quick easy reading that can be done with tarot or oracle cards. Have fun. Hugs.

I loved the Scoobies “lazy bones” video, their “shortage” of enthusiasm reminds me of Norișor’s reluctance to do anything photogenic when I am phone or camera in hand, because otherwise… she is the star of the show in many ways. 😃 Lovely decks, I like them all, such beautiful art!     1. Hi, Nicole. Haha, Yes! As soon as they see that I’m trying to take a photo, they stop whatever cute thing they had been doing. I love the artwork on the cards I showed. However, I don’t want to mislead you about the Archetype cards. Unless you have excellent eyesight, be prepared for eye strain. More than half the cards have light print on a light background.   17. I was hoping one of the Scoobies would pick a card. The bird did a good job. This is a subject that I don’t know a lot about so it was good to at least see the cards. I enjoyed the Oracle deck flip through. I do have one question. While you were flipping I could hear keyboard sounds. Does Daphne or Velma type? Hugs

Although when I saw that they were both lounging, I was surprised to get anything at all. 🐱 I’m happy you enjoyed this sort of a “browse through” post. Actually, the flip through is not my video. (I should have mentioned that, because for a second I realized it would seem like it was me. Adding that video was an afterthought. Sorry.) However, I heard that keyboard sound too and wondered about it. LOL, Velma tries some four-footed typing now and then. Hugs winging back to you.

  18. The darn cats are always uncooperative, aren’t they? lol! I never heard of oracle cards, but I like what you showed. I sometimes use the I Ching to spark story/character ideas. I also used to have a deck of “Gypsy Witch” fortune telling cards that I used in the same way. The Archetype deck seems like it would be right up my alley.

  23. I have the same Medicine deck cards from the day, Teagan. How cool is that! So much talk from The Angel card deck by Doreen Virtue. She abandon them but we won’t go into religion here… lol. 😝 I LOVED THEM and now can’t use or give them away and I can’t burn them.

      I have the angel tarot too, but I never looked into her. I Googled what you mentioned. It strange how many people do a 180 in their various political, religious and/or other views. And how the ones who purport the most love have the least tolerance. Hugs.

        1. Cindy, I can understand how that would cause you a lot of angst and sadness too. I’ve also been looking for a new deck, though not for the same reasons. My novel in progress has a lot to do with tarot (if in a unique non-divinatory way), and I’m hoping the right deck would reignite my interest in cards — and maybe help me finish the story.

          Anyhow, I hoped for something with bigger cards, and that hasn’t happened. So I focused on the artwork. Despite the much higher price I got “Tarot of Sacred Kingdoms” from the Earth Moon Magic company. They’re pretty, but the images are so dark some are hard to make out. My reaction over all was “Meh…” A few weeks later I let myself get the Energy oracle that I showed here. I’m fairly pleased, but I can’t rave about it. Although, I’ve only just gotten it.

          It’s old, but the Osho Zen (you probably already know it) might be a good alternative for you. Something very different. It’s a pain that it changes the name of every card (even though each one does match to a standard tarot card), but each card shows a descriptive name on it, which makes for easy readings. The book is a nice size too. I hope you find something that feels right to you.
