Hello, everyone. It’s here! International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th). So I’m having a blog party. All aboard, me hearties!
Pirates had a penchant for nicknames. Moreover, if they didn’t pick one for themselves then somebody else would hang a pseudonym on them. If ye already have a pirate alias, then ye be in the right place! Iffen ye don’t, then before ye belly up to the bar, let’s get yer pirate nickname. Here’s how we’ll proceed:
- Choose a color or malady suffered on ships.
- Choose an animal, preferably aquatic or on ship.
- Name a 17th-18th century trade, profession or object.
- String the things you picked for 1, 2 and 3 together.
Now that you’ve decided on something like Scurvy Shark the Surgeon, or Purple Spider Picaroon, you’re ready to go a pirating!
What? What’s that, matey? Ye don’t like that way of naming? Alrightie then, there be a Pirate Name Generator over at Reedsey. Click here and it’ll give ye yer pirate name. That fey machine done gave me a bunch of names to pick from and I be choosing my name: Sindra Stormblade.
Let me know your pirate name in a comment.
Now that ye be rightly nicknamed, go to the bar and commence to getting yer tankard of grog, or even better — that tasty bumboo. Don’t mind the bartender. Chris be a fearsome Great Ape, but he mixes a fine drink. Curley from over at Dan Antion‘s No Facilities bar done trained him up all right and proper.

That be Dan Antion’s brand-new book on the bar beside mine. You can get The Museum Murders at these links: Kindle and paperback
Bartender Chris will pour you a tankard of rum, grog, or bumboo. “Bum what?” ye may ask. Me buckos, that be the best pirate drink of ’em all. Below thar be a video telling all about the history of bumboo. The scallywag doin’ the talking eventually gets to telling how to make bumboo.
If ye’d rather get straight to drinkin’ here’s what ye need:
- 3 ounces rum (dark or Jamaican rum works best)
- 4 to 6 ounces water or coconut water
- 1 to 2 teaspoons brown sugar, molasses, or unrefined cane sugar
- Fresh nutmeg for grating
- Optional: Juice from half a fresh lime or a cinnamon stick (as garnish)

It looks like Mistress Darlene‘s dogs found our flag. We can set sail.

Thanks to all my models from Night Cafe
Before we leave port we’ll have a toast:
“Raise yer mugs, ye glorious band of misfits! To the wind at our backs, gold in our pockets, and enemies foolish enough to stand in our way.”
Be sure to let me know your pirate name. Friendly comments are welcome. Hugs on the wing!

Due to the misfortunes of English history, my family was set upon often by the English pirates and British Royal Navy. The scurvy dogs actually stole my forefathers ship of the line when he was in port in the Barbados. He was subsequently imprisoned by the British for his goss neglect in allowing them to steal his ship. The rules were a bit wonky back in the day. Thus my pirate name has always been Lord Geezer, 9th Earl of Huff-n-Puff. Names were a bit wonky back in the day as well. We believed in the most holy of scripture that says if you can’t beat em, join em. Arrrrrrrrrrr! 🏴☠️🦜
