Whatnot Wednesday: Where, What, When We Read #CFFC

Wednesday, August 19, 2026

Welcome, all.  The Scoobies are lazy on this hot August day, but I told them there was a nap-time story in it for them if they helped with this installment of Dan Antion‘s “Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge” (CFFC).   Dan asked the multi-part question, Where, What, and When do you read?

Where?

Velma favorite bed
Velma’s favorite bed, 2024

Velma:  I know the answer to that one.  Yummy Human reads in bed or sitting at her desk.  But she reads at her Kindle too.  I’m calling that a WHERE.

Hey, Yummy… don’t you think it’s time you got a new Kindle cover?  That one’s looking a little… well-loved.  Why do you keep it?  Is it like a favorite mouse toy that smells just right from having a couple of years’ worth of slobbers on it?  Anyway, I sure do like to scrub my cheek on it when you’re reading.  I’m trying to add to the aroma.

2026-08-17 Velma sees tattered Kindle case

I don’t know, Velma.  I just never think about it.  I haven’t had to use any duct tape to hold it together.  So, it must not be too bad then.  You two go ahead with this challenge.  I’m not any good at this one.  Besides, I need to try and fix the air purifier.  The wires came loose on the ionization frame…

Daphne:  Okay Yummy.  We got this!  Leme see…  Yummy listens to audiobooks at the kitchen table, when she— Oh, I can’t say that because that’s jumping ahead to the post for “Where, What, When do you LISTEN.”

Velma:  Yummy said something about Memory Lane and Dan Antion’s first book, Knuckleheads.  (Buy it here, it’s a purr-fectly great book.)  I guess Memory Lane is another place where she reads.  But that also brings us to…

What?

Velma, Knuckleheads, and Daphne, 2026

From Kunckleheads:

“Can you visit the computer center at Pitt for me?”

A small chill went up my spine, and I was sure my expression told Billy I was worried about that. I didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize my scholarship. He explained it was a simple thing. “They have a Star Trek program. If I knew the name of the program, I could play it from the terminal at school. I could even assemble a fleet and have you join my fleet from your school.”

Velma:  I’m not sure I understand where Memory Lane is either.  You know… Knuckleheads won’t help us go back to sleep though.  It’s exciting.  Where would you go if you could travel just by using your dreams, Daphne?

Anyhow, Yummy will have to pick a different story for nap-time.  But that Miss Fortune Mystery cozy series she’s been into won’t do either — it’s too funny.  She finished the fourth book, Swamp Team 3 this week.  Tiny the Rottweiler cracked me up.

Daphne:  Yeah, she’s already reading the next book in that series — Gator Bait.  They’re by Jana DeLeon.  Can’t decide which characters are funnier, the little old ladies who used to be spies, or the CIA assassin who’s so out of her element pretending to be a girly-girl.

When?

Daphne on bed questioning
Daphne 2025

Daphne:  Yummy Human, did you fix the air purifier thingie?  Oh, you’re not sure the wire thing you fixed is going to work good enough?  I see that you ordered a part for it…  What do you mean no new toys for a while?  That part cost HOW MUCH?  Well, okay.  We’ll make that sacrifice.  Besides, we’d rather play with paper balls and plastic rings anyway.  Hey, don’t forget to give us that ring from the Gatorade bottle — those roll the best.

So, anyway, I’ve noticed that sometimes, after you come and tell us goodnight, you’re awake for a really long time with a book.  How am I supposed have a good nocturnal prowl if you’re awake?

In bed reading Swamp Team 3, by Jana DeLeon

Daphne:  I think she should count her desk and computer as a WHERE too, because she reads so much when I help her do research for stories.  I’m just not sure of the names of all the books she uses.   She’s been working on a ghost story set in the 1920s.

Computer researching 1920s

Velma:  That seems a lot like WHERE and WHAT to me… so does that other picture.  I’m getting confused.  Maybe I need some ‘nip.  Okay… so, the WHEN is when she’s at the computer and mostly not paying attention to us.  Oh well, we’re sleeping then anyway.  And the WHAT is at the computer or the table or in bed…  And the WHERE is the computer and the table and the bed…

Oh, thank Bastet! I found the ‘nip, and not a minute too soon.

You know, Daphne…  Maybe it’s all the same, WHERE and WHAT and WHEN… all looped together in the same quantum physics plane… Where Time Becomes a Loop.

Daphne:  Velma, I take it that you found the ‘nip.  Sounds like it’s a good batch too.  Yummy, I don’t think we need a nap-time story quite yet…

Velma:  Woo-whoo!  Wahaha hahaha!

Thanks for visiting, what, where, or whenever we are.   Friendly comments are welcome.  Hugs.

  1. Velma’s description makes the well-loved Kindle cover part of the reading memory, not just a device accessory. The prompt almost wants a fourth question beside where, what, and when: who or what was with you? A tiny scene record—place, object, companion, time of day—would bring back the cheek rubs and hot August nap-time atmosphere long after the book title alone has faded.

  2. Velma looks so comfy in her bed. You’re right about playing with paper balls and plastic rings. Some of Bond’s favorite toys are some Reese made with pipe cleaners and ribbon years ago. Hugs to you and the Scoobies!

WHAT the Scoobies are up to.

WHEN the Scoobies decide where they’ll do what.

OMG! Velma and Daphne could not be any more adorable.

Thank you, with h u g s sprinkled on top!

    1. LOL, Edward, Velma absolutely loves that bed. I got one just like it for Daphne, and she wouldn’t have anything to do with it — I eventually gave it to the neighbors.

Cozy type fiction is about all I can handle with my C-PTSD. If you aren’t looking for deep literature, it’s a good book. I didn’t realize until this week how huge the series is… Anyhow, definitely read the first book first — “Louisiana Longshot.” After that, I’m not sure how much the order of reading matters. (Confusingly, Swamp Team-3 is book 4…) I’m on the fifth book and still enjoying them. Light reading, but very entertaining. Thanks for reading and commenting. Hugs.

      1. Does the bed come in an adult size? I want one. 😂

I hear you. PTSD is a pain. I’m managing mine using CPT techniques, but it’s hard sometimes.

Thank you for the breakdown of the books. I want to add more fiction, so your recommendations are appreciated.

        1. I hesitate, Edward… Based on your blog, your reading preferences seem pretty serious. I’m enjoying this series enormously. But these are just fun, derring-do that turns comical, and friendships are wrapped around a new mystery in each book.

I also enjoy M. C. Beaton’s “Agatha Raisin” series of cozy mysteries set in the Cotswolds in England. Again, read the first book first, but after that the order isn’t terribly important — *Except* that the way Beaton develops Agatha’s character across the books is fascinating to see. I was amazed by the way the author sneakily drew me to care about this heroine that I found so unlikable (at first). There was a TV series, which is enjoyable, but it doesn’t begin to capture the elements in the books. I like to listen to the Audible ones with narrator Penelope Keith. Okay, those are my admittedly light reading recommendations for fiction. 🤗😁

          1. Hey, I’m serious, but I like to have fun once in a while. 😆 I’m currently reading The Hobbit, and after that, The Lord of the Rings. I watched the movies but never read the books, so since they are on our bookshelf, I decided to go for it. I really appreciate your recommendations, my friend.

            1. Oooh, ambitious. I think you’ll love “LOTR,” especially when you think about Tolkien, his attitudes, and times. It’s also great for anyone who is not very familiar with what I call “quest type” fantasy. It’s massive, detailed, shows his brilliance with languages… But don’t think all fantasies of similar “quest type” take such an immersive dive. If you find you like LOTR, you might try Terry Brooks. His “Sword of Shanara” (the first few books particularly) chillingly pull in the worst aspects of humanity into his shadow creatures. He doesn’t come out and say it, which made the mental connection a reader makes more powerful. Anyhow, I’ll shut up now. Happy weekend.

  4. Teagan – Velma and Daphne were at their best today. They have given us a wonderfully revealing portrait of the reader in their household! I smiled at the idea that WHERE, WHAT and WHEN eventually become so entangled that perhaps they really are all part of the same loop. I love what you read and of course, Velma and Daphne are excellent literary correspondents. Sending many hugs on speedy wings to you and the Scoobies!

    1. Hi, Rebecca. LOL, I got so tangled up in with this challenge. If it had included a WHO or a HOW I might not have gotten so lost in the time loop. But on the other hand, there was a theoretical physicist who postulated that there is actually only *one* moment in time — that the vast expanse of past, present, and future all happens at once and that it only takes that one moment. So, if that’s the case, I guess WHERE, WHAT and WHEN are all the same. Ugh… I woke up with a headache this morning, and I think that I just brought it back with that ponderation. 😀 Ha! Many thanks for joining us. Hugs and purrs. ❤

  5. Time becoming a loop is certainly going to be the case around here today after seeing that clip lol. The Kindle cover is part of the fabric of the household…very colorful and very loved. It was nice of the Scoobies to approve that budgetary expense of the air purifier thingie. (I would be happy with the ring from the Gatorade bottle as well…). Hugs, Teagan and Scoobies!

    1. Hi, Bruce. Haha. Thank goodness they were napping when I was working on the wire frame. Thread-like wires sashaying around uncontrollably would have been a huge temptation. The machine seems to be working okay despite being two “collector wires” short now. But with the air here (and asthma) I need it at optimum, so the $100 part was a necessity. Although for what it is, that price is beyond outrageous — it’s 1/7th the cost of the whole machine. (It’s a medical-grade air purifier.) Such is life. LOL, and time really does seem to be a loop. 😀 Hugs.

  6. Thanks Teagan and thanks Velma and Daphne. You guys did a great job. Thanks for featuring Knuckleheads. If Yummy ever calls you that, know that she means it in a loving way.

I think the cover is gently used. I laughed that the lack of duct tape being an indicator, but you want it to feel good. No one wants to break in a new one.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of this week and slide into the weekend nice and easy.

    1. LOL… well, Dan, I’ve already admitted to you that I’m the queen of duct tape. I’ve actually spent (aka wasted) the morning comparing “book seats” and settled on one. I’m hoping it will prevent me aggravating the shoulder issue. It was a joy to feature Knuckleheads. I hope you are having a great time. Hugs and purrs.

  7. Now I’m going to be saying, “Time becomes a loop” all day; you know that, don’t you? Thanks for the book recommendation. Of course, I already have Knuckleheads, but I wasn’t aware of the Miss Fortune series. It sounds right up my alley.

        1. I didn’t realize just how many there are until the other day. Definitely start with the first one, “Louisiana Longshot” because it establishes Fortune’s character. I’m only on book #5, and each one builds a little bit on the one before it, for the histories of the characters… but after you’ve read the first one, it probably doesn’t matter much what order you use. Personally read (or watch shows) in order — it’s just me.
So far there are two story-threads that continue unfinished from one book to the next. The main one being (and this is not a spoiler) the trouble Fortune is in (the bounty on her) and her reason for being in “Sinful, Louisiana.” The other is a bit of a romance thread for her. It’s not heavy on romance though, more mystery and light humor. Although it’s not unusual for me to laugh out loud at something. Enjoy!

  8. You know I love Daphne and Velma, my favorite orange kitties after Garfield. I usually read in bed, or in a chair in the living room. When the heat ever leaves here, I will go back to reading on the patio. I was just thinking I needed a new cover for my Kindle. It’s not too worn but very stained. I doubt anyone else would want to handle it.

Enjoy the rest of the week and give those kitties some nice rubs for me!

    1. Noelle, I hear you about “if the heat ever leaves.” My forecast has the next 10 days at or over 100 degrees… Anyhow, Deborah got me looking at “book seats” instead of a new kindle case. I’ve developed a problem with my shoulder, and I think one might be helpful. I was shocked at the variety of options. There are everything from hard cases with multiple compartments to beanbags with a ridge-shelf — and everything in between. I’m comparing the “softness” of the underside to the kind of pockets and/or compartments that would be useful to me. Search link:

Hugs and purrs to you and the kitty crew.

      1. The lap holder looks super. And you can also have a beverage while you’re reading. I might give that one a thumbs up. Right now I am dealing with horrible mats – this time of year, for some reason, Garfield gets tons of mats. I could shave him but I prefer to just cut them out and brush, brush, brush.

Let me know if you like this!

        1. Haha, some of them have an actual cup-holder and snack dish. Most nights I need a combination of listening to an audiobook (on my phone) while working a puzzle (usually Happy Color but sometimes the “arrow scape” things) to get to (or go back to) sleep. So no cupholders for me — I want to be able to just shift the whole works over to the bed beside me. LOL, along with the half-dozen pillows of various shapes and sizes. Yes, I go to extremes trying to sleep! 😀

  9. I am very familiar with all those reading places and when as well. I haven’t had a cover for my kindle since I last upgraded it eons ago. My Mom gave me a bookseat and that’s where my Kindle lives. ” It doesn’t have any duct tape, so it’s not too bad.” LOL! That made me laugh out loud. That’s sound reasoning to me! 😊Hugs.

    1. LOL, I’m glad I could give you a giggle about the duct tape, Deborah. I knew there were holders of various types for tablets but never really investigated them. I’m glad you mentioned your book seat. I’m browsing right now, and there are some very cool and efficient looking ones. Lately I’ve developed a problem with my shoulder and one of those might be a very good idea. Thanks for reading and commenting. Hugs and purrs.

      1. My Mom gave me one with a secure reading glasses pocket. I can’t tell you how often that has kept me from having to go on hunt for a pair. I always put a pair back in that pocket. It’s the one place I’m consistent with my reading glasses.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. I just settled on one that can adjusted very well for angle, and has a pocket big enough for glasses and phone. I’d rather have better pockets or an actual compartment, but my first choice had many reports of a strong chemical smell — and I can’t deal with that. I’d also rather it had a more pliable cushion/beanbag bottom, but this is the best compromise for the details I wanted. LOL, thanks for shopping with me. 😀

  10. The Scoobies nailed this prompt. Your Kindle cover is gently used which is the way it should be. Mine is the same but in classic black and also with a few tooth prints from Temteste’s puppy days. Wishing you a lovely down slide to the weekend. Hugs

    1. Hi, John. LOL, I have to chuckle about the tooth prints. Velma really does like to scrub her cheek against the Kindle cover when I’m holding it. With a surprising amount of force too — can’t hold it steady at all when she’s doing that. I like doing those “arrow scape” puzzles on it, and she’s caused me to lose many a game doing that. 🙂 We have another 10 days of 100 degree (at least) weather in the forecast. I guess it’s probably hot there too, so take care. Hugs and purrs.

    1. Hi, Daniel. Yeah… both cats give “love bites.” Velma’s don’t hurt. However, for the first couple of years Daphne was really aggressive with it — she’s a big cat with big teeth… It took a lot of patience and at least two years to get her to understand. Apparently I have a flavor the cats like. 😹 🙄

Thanks for reading and commenting. Hugs.

      1. LOL! 😹 They do that just in case they hit hard times, they want to know if you are edible. After a few years of regular meals, they stop worrying. If they lick you then bite you, always sleep with one eye open. My cats used to do that to our Irish Setter pup. My wife thought the cats loved our little puppy, but they were just hungry and they needed something to snack on until dinner. The puppy grew up thinking it was a cat and it was the biggest cat-dog in the house so She was elected boss lady by the others.

  11. Thanks to Daphne and Velma for another amusing and informative post. I love the books you’re reading, Teagan, and I suspect it is all a bit mixed for me as well, as I read most of the time, in different places… And the cover for the Kindle had me thinking, because mine is quite old as well…

Big hugs and have a lovely week, you three! ♥

    1. Hi, Olga. Yes, the print design on the Kindle cover started fading and cracking within a few months. Oher than that, it held up well for six years, but not it’s gotten flappity floppity. LOL. Stay safe and well. Hugs winging back to you.
