A YouTube short video of pastel orange roses and a black butterfly
Hello, all. I hope you’re enjoying a relaxing weekend. Yesterday we had a much needed, lengthy rain. I don’t see many butterflies here, other than small delicate white ones. Although, there are a lot of roses. I’m sure they all enjoyed the rain. Unfortunately, the temperatures are already flirting with 100 degrees F again, and even higher forecasted for the coming week. It was a nice reprieve though, if only for a few hours. Now, it’s time for a little floriography trivia. Let’s head down a rabbit hole for things about the month of June.
Flowers of the Month: Roses & Honeysuckle

For June, the traditional birth-month flower is the rose. The modern-day alternate is honeysuckle. Other symbology includes the colors light-orange and white. The birthstone, in old classic tradition is the pearl. Modern tradition adds the moonstone, and color-changing Alexandrite to the birthstones for June.
June’s Animals

The butterfly — but there’s a rabbit hole to get to why. June is associated with transformation and the soul. That symbolism was derived from the Roman goddess Juno. Because of her, the month represents a bridge between earthly life and the divine. Celtic tradition similarly associates the butterfly with the soul, transition, and transformation. So, June’s primary animal is the butterfly.
However, in Native American tradition the woodpecker represents communication and finding your rhythm. It’s the totem animal for the second half of June. Additionally, the raccoon is tied to June in certain Native American folklore.
Heart had a brilliant song called “Dog and Butterfly.” However, it always made me sad. So, I’m using this retro performance of Dolly Parton singing her whimsical “Love is Like a Butterfly.” The lyrics are charming. The video above was from the 1975 Country Music Awards.
I appreciate you following me down this June-flower trivia rabbit hole. Thanks to my fabulous animal models that I created with Night Cafe. Friendly comments are welcome. Hugs!

That’s a gorgeous rose! Before my parents moved to SC, my dad grew several different varieties and colors of roses, but he hasn’t tried it since. Hugs to you and the Scoobies, Teagan!

Hi, Teri. I’m partial to the various orange ones. I have one a darker shade than that one, but it’s barely hanging on. Thanks for reading and commenting. Hugs back to you and Bond.

This is a delightful post. I’ve had a crazy work week, mind you every week seems crazy this year, but I get Fridays off. That helps me get my reviews and posts ready for the next week. So tonight is my Friday night and I’m pleased to have read this enchanting post 🌈🤗

Thank you for your kind encouragement, Robbie. I hear you about the crazy week, although mine wasn’t the same kind of cray-cray. Have you started your “new chapter” or are you still at the same job? I know you made a decision to leave, and had offers, but… I got lost at that point. Anyway, I hope you have a splendid weekend. Hugs.

HI Teagan, my pleasure. I have been in my new job for five weeks now. It is shorter hours but there’s a lot of new people, new systems, and so forth, so its been a lot of learning. I am liking this environment better and am very glad I made the change. There is no perfection in life but better is good.

I know it’s hot there too — and humid. Unlike most of the USA, New Mexico gets a monsoon season. Although, it’s so extremely dry here that often the rain evaporates before it reaches the ground. But similar does not apply to the wind. Yesterday I was sincerely afraid that the roof of my house was being pulled off.
When your monsoons arrive I hope they will be beneficial rains and not destructive. Big hugs. 🤗

A fabulous rabbit hole Teagan, thank you!
I expected the rose, butterfly and even the woodpecker is not surprising.
However, I am elated to see the raccoon here. I adore raccoons, though they are much loathed in the city. It is an under appreciated animal, that in nature has a role as a cleaner.
It cleans in the city too, but there is so much garbage, that they have no shortage of food. Hence, they become pesky.
Your raccoon in a gown is adorable.
Big bandit eyed hugs!

Resa, your comment made me happy — I like raccoons too. You’ve probably seen this, but I’ll share in case you haven’t. Around 2012 there was a documentary that spent most of its time in Canada, but a significant part also in Japan on the urban (or in Japan, temple) raccoons. My then cat, Crystal watched it attentively. There was a segment with baby raccoons that she absolutely loved. I think Netflix has it and maybe PBS, but here it is on Youtube:

I’m delighted that you liked my little Victorian raccoon model. I was pleased with how she turned out. Hugs winging back to you.

I have seen this. We are a bit … nostalgic about raccoons in Toronto. It is known as the Raccoon Capital of the World!
Yes, a heady distinction.
All raccoons are now wearing gowns, in my mind!
H🦝GS!

Oh Teagan, I thoroughly enjoyed following you down this June rabbit hole. I knew that roses were associated with June, but I had never explored the connection between the butterfly, transformation, and the month itself. The symbolism feels especially fitting as spring gives way to summer and the garden seems to enter a new phase of life.
I was also delighted to learn about the honeysuckle and the pearl. There is something wonderfully romantic and timeless about all three—roses, butterflies, and pearls. Sending hugs on speedy wings to you and the Scoobies!

I’m delighted that you enjoyed this, Rebecca. Yes, pearls… I’m kicking myself for not adding something about the connection with the moon too… Purrs and hugs back to you. ❤

Terrific post, Teagan. It seems June has a lot of support in the flower, gem, and Animal world. I can see why folks would pick June for marriage ceremonys. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much, John. Yes, there’s a lot. I decided to keep this post short, but I probably should have added something about the moon and weddings. I didn’t even think about the weddings. Have a splendid weekend. Hugs.

That rose in the video is gorgeous! My grandfather used to have a rose bush with flowers something like that. Rio Samba, I think was the name of it. Thanks for the Dolly Parton song — I’m a big, big fan.

I just went through a June Ted Talk and it was very informative. Thank you Teagan. Most of what you enlightened I had not known before. It makes me think I need to look deeper into our months of the year. I’ve always had an affinity for roses. My maternal grandmother was quite the adventurous Gardner and roses of all colors were her specialty. Of course, she lived in Florida so the roses grew themselves 10 months out of the year.

That does sound interesting, Daniel. I’ll see if I can find it on YouTube. Your grandmother’s rose garden must have been a sight to see. Thanks for reading and commenting. Hugs.

Roses have so many lovely colors and, of course, butterflies! Couldn’t be more perfect and Dolly Parton, oh my. An American legend. She is also incredibly kind. She has a foundation that sends books free of charge to any child who signs up.
Pets to the Scoobies and maybe a treat?

Indeed she is, Noelle. I’m happy you enjoyed this. LOL, of course the Scoobies got a treat. They have me well trained. Vitamin “treats” in the morning before I even get out of bed. And a few regular treats during the day. Although since Daphne doesn’t need any extra calories, her treats are some kind of vitamin or hairball remedies. Hugs.

We don’t see many butterflies here either, so thanks for the video, the information, and the song as well. It is nice to have so much colour and cheer as we are heading for hotter weather (here as well). Big hugs, Teagan, and love to the Scoobies. Have a beautiful (and not too hot) weekend!
