Scoobies: Velma Different Drums

Daaphne sits in window 2026-03-24

Daphne:  What’s that vibration?
Velma by screen 2026-03-24 Velma:  It’s either a big air tanker taking a water-bomb to the forest fire, or Yummy Human singing Karaoke, or… Oh! It might be her drum!

Daphne:  That’s not a plane.  I only like Yummy’s singing when she makes up kitty-cat songs with my name in them and sings them to me.  And that drum… no way.  I’m outta here.

Velma:  The drum case is empty!  Yummy Human has the steel-tongue drum.  Make way Yummy, here I come!

Oof!  Careful where you jump, Velma.

Velma:  C’mon, Yummy Human — give me that mallet so I can play the drum.
No… you always want to chew the wool part, Velma.  It doesn’t work very well with your slobbers on it.  Yep… just like you’re doing now.

Velma:  Don’t be such a prima donna, Yummy.  Fine then.  I’ll help you hold the drum.  Feet like so, right?  Just reach around me.  I’m not in the way.

Velma:  Ya know, Yummy… You might actually learn to play a song on this drum if you practiced more.  I can’t imagine why you don’t.

Velma:  I’m tired now.  Drumming is hard work.

And now, for your listening pleasure, Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies:

The Scoobies and I wish everyone a splendiferous weekend.  Friendly comments are encouraged.  Hugs!

  1. Velma and Daphne are amazing, Teagan. There is such a sense of curiosity and play in the way you brought them together around the drum. And The steel-tongue drum is a wonderful instrument choice. There is something so calming and almost meditative about its sound. Great video teaser!!!! Sending hugs on speedy wings to you and the Scoobies.

    1. Hi, Rebecca. The various brands and types are definitely not created equal. I liked the pure tones from Kosmosky best and this one (New Wave 15) was my 2nd favorite. They had one that had a beautiful metal top (where the tongues are) on a wood base, with an even more superb tone… but this one has several more notes, so I chose it. Now if I can ever learn to play it. I hoped that it would be similar enough to playing piano that I could pick it up fairly easily — but I was very wrong. (Rueful laugh)
Anyhow you said “meditative” so here’s a nice meditation-length video of it. Hugs on the wing!

  2. Hilarious Scoobies’ post, thank you!

You can play your drum, Teagan, but the Scoobies are much smarter than you, so take heed of all their drumming advice.

Love the song …and EGADS cats are the cutest things on this planet!

    HUGS!

    1. Actually, they play the drum better than me too. I just can’t get the hang of it… although I don’t play with it nearly often enough. As for smarter… everybody is smarter than me.
I’m glad you enjoyed this. Hugs back to you — and Misha.

    1. Haha, that is so true, Barbara — Scoobie time is definitely all the time. Velma is in my face with Karaoke and the drum, and Daphne is next to me whenever the computer keys are clacking. They divide up the responsibilities of supervising me. 😉 Have a wonderful new week. Hugss.

    1. LOL, that’s my excuse, John — and I’m stickin’ with it. Truthfully, like most things playing with it feels like a luxury to me, and I have a hard time giving myself permission… So I let myself forget. Thanks for visiting. Big hugs.

    1. Good one, Tim. I think Velma could probably play it better than me. The notes are arranged so differently from the piano that I’m still trying to get my head around it. Granted… I don’t give myself much time with it… With these two hooligans, I don’t leave it sitting out, and out of sight– out of mind. Happy June. Hugs.

  3. Charming to see Velma enjoying herself, getting in your way. And chewing your drumstick. She’s a winner!

Love Linda Ronstadt – fun music for a Saturday. Lots of belly rubs to Velma and the other member of the Scoobies.

        1. LOL, I mostly don’t want the mallet to be destroyed. Kosmosky sent links to several videos about caring for the drum. For metal, and rather heavy (for what it is) it sounds surprisingly delicate. Fingers seem to be the widely preferred method of playing them, but I like the purity of the tone the wool mallets give it. Besides… I’m bad enough with it as it is. I can’t get the hang of using my fingers for it. All my notes come out flat. It’s technique, but… whatever.
Anyhow every different type of mallet (there are several) produces a slightly different tone. Here’s someone using hard rubber mallets. I despair of ever playing it well, but… it is relaxing to just mess around with it. I “picked out” an old hymn on it a few weeks ago. I was tinkering and recognized the combination of notes — I had not thought of that old song in 30 years. But I don’t play it well enough for anyone to recognize it.

  4. It’s great to see the Scoobies enjoying themselves, and I remember you talking about your drum, so it’s good to see it here. I hope we might hear it in action in the future as well. Happy weekend, big hugs and love to you all, dear Teagan!

  5. Nothing gets in the way of doing anything the way a cat can. It’s their nature to be involved. She does look like she could hold that drum.

I have to admit, I never realized Linda Rondstadt was the singer on that song. I remember the song, but I guess I remember her from her solo work. Thanks for helping me meet the goal of learning at least one thing a day.

I hope you have a great weekend.
