Weekend Reads: April

Cover image by Teagan

Welcome, everyone.  I’m not complaining — just explaining. Because I haven’t finished The Path of Lilies, I must give you an explanation.  The combination of back pain, allergies, and lack of sleep had me far enough under the weather on Friday that I wasn’t able to write a post for this weekend.  However, I needed to do a post, so I’m doing Weekend Reads.

I rarely take on book cover work for others these days, but once in a while I feel able.  I decided to share a couple of new books for which I did the cover images. The first is brand new from Marian Allen.  I did the image quite a while back.  Although I only did the image, not the text.  So, I was excited to see the book released, and see what they did with the title.  Announcing…

I thought it would be fun to share some other cover concepts I did for Marian last year, below.

I’ve been honored to do the covers for four volumes of Robbie Cheadle‘s “Poetry Treasures” series.  That’s the recently published volume below.

Here’s a post from Robbie announcing the book: https://www.robbiecheadle.co.za/poetry/poetry-treasures-4-in-touch-with-nature/

Just for fun here are some other concepts I gave Robbie for the cover of this volume. Robbie was the photographer for the background pictures for all of them. However, these (below) are only very rough drafts with place-holder text, and I would have done a lot of improving to my collages before providing a final cover.

Heartfelt thanks for visiting.  I hope you’ll check out these terrific books. Please visit Marian and Robbie to congratulate them.  Friendly comments are encouraged. Hugs!

Of course, there must be the obligatory shameless self-promotion.

  1. Teagan, I hope you’re feeling better! Pain and allergies can really sap your energy and motivation. So I hope these are lessening for you, and that you’re able to get good sleep. On another note: It’s neat to see the variations of cover designs. Like seeing “behind the scenes” of the process of getting to the final design. I wish you a no pain and better week 🌞

    1. Thanks, Dave. Sleep really does help and last night wasn’t bad for sleep.
Considering your artwork, I really appreciate your comment. A few years ago I did a post showing how I create my book covers. (Imagine my jaw dropping when I published the first volume (of 14) for Dead of Winter and realized I was going to need to do a new cover every month. I didn’t take that into account when I gave myself a monthly schedule for releasing the epic. Anyhow, I laughed out loud when one woman commented something like “Oh, yeah. That’s basically what I do too.” (*Snorts*)

Have a good new week. Hugs.

  2. Teagan, I really love the talented covers and concepts on display here. I do hope that back gets better, those allergies calm down (I’m right there with ya!), and the sleep improves. Take care.🙂

    1. You are so kind, Rebecca. Thanks about Lulu. I put a ton of work into that cover (after going through several different concepts). I took the model from a paused video of a black and white 1930 film, so you can imagine the difficulty of transforming her and erasing the background around all that fringe…
I appreciate you reading and commenting. Hugs on the wing.

  3. You do terrific covers, Teagan.

I especially love what you did for Robbie’s book.

The “Frenemies in Space” cover is fabulous.

You know, I do those “Gowntoons” stories with drawings on my Art Gowns blog. They are usually 3 episodes long. Sometimes it takes me months to get to the next episode, and it’s not just because of the drawing time. Inspiration will come when it comes.

    Sending big hugs!

    1. Thanks so much Darlene. That one was an impulse on my part. It didn’t go with Robbie’s request for silhouettes, but I liked the parrots and decided to offer it anyway. I was happy that I did.
Marian had contacted me about her cover about a year ago, but she had a terrible fall, which caused her to put off publishing.
      Hugs winging back to you.

    1. It’s my pleasure, Marian. You’ve just given me a post idea. Wednesday I’m going to share my image contributions to Dan’s Thursday Doors Writing Challenge. That will let me promote the challenge too. One has an old house with gypsy wagon in front yard, another has two women in elaborate Venetian carnival costumes inside a palace, and the third has a pair of green gecko lizards outside an adobe house. I felt all sorts of story potentials as I made the collages.
Wishing you huge success with Frenemies in Space. Hugs.

  4. Wonderful book covers, Teagan. We have “Pieces of April” and it’s not even “a mornin’ in May…” Do you remember “Pieces of April” by Three Dog Night?

  5. I hope you’re feeling better soon, Teagan, but I have to tell you, this was a wonderful post.

I have be rushing and running all week, and busy for the past few weeks. As a result, I did not know Marian has a new release. I’m working my way through my favorite blogs, catching up as I can, but I haven’t got to hers yet. Thanks!

You do wonderful work on these covers. You have a very good eye for what works.

    1. I’m trying to shake it off, Dan. Everything has just made me tired, that’s all — but thank you.
You’ve had a lot on your plate for quite a while. Do take good care of you — it adds up.
I think Marian’s accident derailed her book (s?). She had contacted me about a cover about a year ago I think. Thank you kindly for the compliment. Hugs.
