Welcome June — and welcome to you too, everyone. Last month the May issue of “Dead of Winter” ended with a ginormous cliffhanger at “Llyn Pistyll Falls.”  Today I’m pleased to announce Journey 6, the Fluting Fell, and get us off that cliff. 

Also, at the beginning, I guesstimated that this series would run for roughly a year.  Even today that is not something I can pin down.  However, I was just looking at the original manuscript, and with Journey 6, I’m figuring that we are about half way through the epic.

Emlyn’s story continues in Journey 6, The Fluting Fell.  She gains tragic insight into Boabhan… horrifying things that she is too young to know.  This event also shows an unexpected softer side to another character.

The travelers reach an abandoned estate, Wych Elm Manor, although it is not completely unoccupied.  It yields answers as well as questions.  Emlyn finds clues that lead them farther into their journey.  She also meets the silvery-haired young man again.

The travelers have put some distance between themselves and the Brethren of Un’Naf, but do even worse dangers await them?  The risk deepens when they take refuge in a mysterious structure.

An Out-Take — A Dead of Winter Vignette

There’s more to transforming this ginormous novel into a monthly series than most people expect.  Some scenes that would be just fine, if they turned up in the middle of 900 pages, just don’t work in a novelette.  I liked this “slice of life” from Osabide’s point of view, but I still had to remove it.  However, that doesn’t mean I can’t share it here.

The wagon swayed with a gentle rhythm.  Osabide had been on the road long enough that now it even felt comforting.  Though at first she would not have thought that would ever be possible.  When she was young, she had traveled on horseback many times with her husband, Quinn.  However, wagon travel was something new to her.  She wouldn’t tell anyone, but at first it made her queasy.  She kept peppermint leaves tucked in her pocket and chewed them whenever the nausea bothered her.  However, lately she rarely needed it.

Osabide tied a last bundle of fever-bane and put it with the other carefully organized herbs, satisfied with her work.  It had been a long time since she had been able to practice healing, but none the less she had always tried to keep a good stock of supplies, the tools of her former profession.  In fact she felt a little anxious when her stocks ran low.  She was happy to have spotted several useful plants during the party’s last stop.

As she closed the cleverly designed cupboard inside the wagon, she mused about the new twist in the path of her life.  Her entire world was turned upside-down when the Brethren targeted Emlyn – and subsequently her as well.  However, she told herself that if she could get used to the sway of the wagon, then she could make whatever other adjustments she needed to make.  There was no going back to her lovely cottage at the foot of Forlorn Peak.

Even so, it broke her heart to think of giving up her home.  Every day she missed the cottage that she and her late husband had built together.  With any luck, someday the world would right itself and she would return to it.  She forced her thoughts further down that positive track.  She was also in the midst of an adventure, the likes of which she had never imagined.  Sometimes she felt too old for it.  Sometimes she felt like she’d never been so alive!

    1. Ha! Neither can I, Kirt. Even though I wrote the epic a decade ago, getting a novelette-sized amount edited (and sometimes adding an extra scene) feels like a full time job. I love it, but I’m trying to keep up my energy.

    I enjoyed the “slice of life” from Osabide’s point of view. It actually helped remind me of Journey 1.

    1. Thank you, Noelle. Journey 6 has one of the “issues” that held me back — other than the monumental disaster of Game of Thrones getting out the door first with the “Winter is coming!” line. (I left the epic on the shelf for a decade). Now I think my mind amplified something into a big issue when, if handled carefully, it’s okay to include. Anyhow, it’s been a little more work than I expected, but I do enjoy it. Thanks for your support. Hugs on the wing!

  18. Congratulations, Teagan! I shall read Journey 5 and 6 in one go now! Yes! Great out-take as well. I love Osabide and it’s good to catch up on her thoughts and feelings on the journey. I hope there will be a mammoth available with all the installments at the end, but I hope we won’t miss on the beautiful covers for each of the Journeys. They’d make a lovely portrait gallery.

    1. Rebecca, you would be perfect, cast as Osabide! I really wanted to keep this point of view scene with her, but it wasn’t long enough for me to work it out. I don’t remember if she has “PoV” scenes farther along. If she doesn’t I’ll have to write one. 😀 You’ve inspired me. Hugs on the wing!

    1. Thanks, Tim. Nope, no weather drama here. Mother Nature farted out about 22 big drops of rain one day, but not enough to call a shower. Thunderstorms are in the forecast today, but I haven’t checked to see if there’s any likelihood of the rain actually making it to the ground. It sure would be nice. I hope all is well up north.
