2026 Bad Moon Rising: A Peril in Unseen Frequencies (reblog)

Thursday, October 8, 2026

Hi, everyone.  Today I’m being interviewed at Teri Polen’s Bad Moon Rising (BMR).  I’m asking you to please click that LINK and visit with us there.  I’m also sharing part of the post here, partly so that I have it in my files. However, comments are closed here, because I really want you to join the fun at Teri’s.

After the first book in my 1920s paranormal series called “A Medium’s Peril”, there have been a few years now when I’ve managed to write a new story for the series, specially for BMR. This is such a year, although it’s a quick-read novelette.  Let’s get to Teri’s fantastic fun questions.

Fun Questions

1: If you could invite five fictional characters to a Halloween dinner party, who would they be—and who would end up dead?

I’m going to get more specific with this idea and have the characters all be wizards.

  • Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander (known as Zedd) is my favorite wizard. He’s actually quite powerful, and one of the main characters in Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth book series and the television adaptation Legend of the Seeker.  He’s as quirky as a serious wizard character could be, from the pet chicken to “cloud reading” (usually done naked).  Yes, serious despite it all. You can guess by the nickname The Wind of Death.
  • Harry Dresden from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher – A sharp-tongued private investigator and wizard, working out of modern-day Chicago.
  • Doctor Strange from Marvel Comics – Earth’s Master of the Mystic Arts, guarding reality from cosmic and interdimensional threats.
  • The Wizard of Oz (let’s call him Mr. Diggs for short) from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum – A well-meaning humbug con artist from Omaha who winds up ruling the Emerald City.
  • Albus Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling – The legendary, brilliant headmaster of Hogwarts and leader in the fight against Voldemort.

Dr. Strange and Harry Dresden got into a heated political debate.  Dumbledore wanted nothing to do with muggle politics, so he didn’t participate.  Rather, he was diverted by Harry’s laundry basket, and admired the cozy wool socks there.  Mr. Diggs conned the first two into putting aside the argument for the sake of wizardry’s reputation.  However they soon saw through the con, and well… it didn’t go so well for the Wizard of Oz after that…  After all, he wasn’t exactly a wizard anyway.  Oh, and Zed… in typically Zed fashion, he missed the whole thing.  Zed was up on the roof, where he materialized his cloud reading rock to stand there naked, holding his pet chicken, and gazing at the clouds.  Yes, somebody eventually called the police because of the naked old man on the roof, not because of the noise from the wizards’ battle inside.

I realize I gave a long answer here, so I’ll be brief for the rest of the questions.

2:  Ghosts: believe or don’t?

I feel like such a hypocrite — I firmly believe in ghosts.  Yet I’m often a skeptic whenever someone else talks about their experiences.  Clover Flanagan, who narrates “A Peril in Unseen Frequencies” certainly is a believer in ghosts.  Although she’s still rather new to her paranormal gifts and sometimes doubts what she’s seeing.  The spirits come anyway though.

3:  Full moon or thunderstorm?

Full moon.  My roof leaks.

4:  Which of the following supernatural jobs would you have and why would you be good at it? Witch librarian, vampire baker, ghost tour guide, dragon veterinarian, potion shop owner, or monster therapist.

I can see myself as either a potion shop owner, or a monster therapist.  I’ve studied herbs and supplements for decades.  Although, I also have a lot of empathy for people who are unlike myself in some way – and I’m a good listener.  Hmmm… which?  I’m just not a people person, and retail work doesn’t agree with me in general (long hours on your feet, making sure people pay, awful schedules, etc.).  So, I’d be a monster therapist.

Writing Questions

1:  If all your protagonists met, who would become friends first?

An easy answer to that is tween-age Emlyn from my epic fantasy “Dead of Winter” and 30-something Daphne Moultrie the psychic medium from the series “A Medium’s Peril.” They both see and communicate with ghosts — an instant bond.

2:  What’s your most-used word that isn’t “said”?

Oooh that’s interesting.  There are online things that will count your specific words, but I didn’t want to paste a manuscript into one of those for security reasons.  MS Word won’t do that kind of count, but typing a word into the search bar inside the Navigation Pane will give a total of the word searched.  Not quite the same thing, but I’m curious, so let’s go with me guessing at some words I’m sure I must have used a lot in “A Peril in Unseen Frequencies.”

I make a point of avoiding excessive use of “said” so I’m curious to see how well I did.  “Said” came in with 35. Here are some other words I checked:  Radio was 43.  Etha (protagonist name) 96, and Donald (antagonist) 113 — that one surprised me.

3:  What else have you done recently?

I finalized a nonfiction slang dictionary that I started a year and a half ago.  I published it in time for International Talk Like a Pirate Day, which was a few weeks ago (September 19).  It’s a guidebook-size volume called “Speak Pirate: Slang of the Pirates and Buccaneers.”

Now here are the other things Teri requested.
A Peril in Unseen Frequencies:  A Medium’s Peril Book 4

When a wealthy, widow with a heart condition is given a new radio by her conniving nephew, it soon broadcasts the voice of her late husband — prompting her to rewrite her will with fatal and unexpected consequences.  There’s more than one twist.  This 1920s paranormal story is filled with mystery, history, and fun slang.
