Who’s your dragon?

Does it breath (does it breath) smoke and fire like me?

Welcome, all!  I couldn’t resist the quirky, groovy 1960s video above.  I was happy to find it because a line from this Zombies’ song kept running through my head when I started thinking of this dragon “game” post.  Except, I didn’t think of it as “Who’s your daddy?” In my mind it was “Who’s your dragon?” 

(By the way, in my mind the dancers are dragons breathing smoke and fire — not cigarettes.)

As I mentioned last weekend, I’m going to turn you all into dragons… sort of anyhow.  Using the “World Dragon Oracle” cards by Virginia Chandler and Anne Stokes, I chose cards that had meanings I could associate to personality traits.  I’ve photographed those cards, and placed them below, along with their traits.  Which dragon is most like you?  Let me know in a comment.

However, if that doesn’t work for you, here’s a years’ worth of dragons from Anne’s calendar.  Your dragon can be the one on your birth month.  Or, you can just pick one that you like from any of the photos farther down in the post.  Either way, let me know in a comment, and make your own reason for why it’s your dragon.

Who’s Your Dragon Based on Personality

Like I was saying, the combined picture above is a shortcut — if the personality method doesn’t work for you.  Mostly we’re choosing from the ones in this photo below:

If you have a great memory, you’ll recognize the names for some of these dragons from my Dragons of Cronesboro posts.  Interestingly, I had not seen these oracle cards when I was researching and choosing names for those characters (human and otherwise).  That research is part of what I lost in the epic OneDrive debacle… But I digress.

Let’s get to it then.  Just look at the card and/or the trait associated with that dragon.  Who’s your dragon?

Apep:  Do you see a large-scale change as a chance for rebirth?  Endings as transformations?  Do people also seem to feel safe with you?  If so, then perhaps your dragon is Apep.

Fafnir:  Have you experienced a major event or even trauma that left you forever changed either emotionally or physically?  Or have you known extreme betrayal or abandonment?  If so, then your dragon may be Fafnir.

Huanglong

Huanglong:  Do others remark about your Zen-like calm?  Are you endlessly curious, yet possessed of an inner stillness?  If so, then Huanglong might be your dragon.

Kulshedra:  Do you find your opinions at odds with those of others?  Do you often wish for or take time for reflection?  Do you often wish you didn’t have to be a grownup?  If you have those inner battles, then Kulshedra is probably your dragon.

Kur

Kur:  Can you be relentlessly determined?  Do you sometimes worry that others perceive you as hard, or even uncaring?  Of course, that is not the case. But your dragon might be Kur.

Ladon

Ladon:  Are you a natural mentor?  Do you cast yourself in the role of “keeper of the flock,” feeling responsible for the safety of any group you’re with, or even for the place? If so, Ladon is likely your dragon.

Quetzalcoatl: Everyone is comprised many “parts.” Do you easily switch from one part to the next, tapping into different aspects of yourself depending on the situation or the role in which you are cast?  Or are you very creative?  If that sounds like you, then Quetzalcoatl might be your dragon.

Tiamat:  Do you thrive on creating new things or starting new projects?  Do you feel very loved by those around you?  If that’s so, then Tiamat is probably your dragon.

I expect that most of you share traits with more than one of these dragons.  If that’s the case then go back to all the cards that apply, and study the photos.  Look at the details in the artwork and choose the one that just seems to “click” with you.

Me?  Who’s my dragon?  Well, like some of you, I shared traits with a few of the dragons.  However, one was such a strong “backstory match” that I couldn’t deny it.  My dragon is Fafnir.

  2. Hmm, I didn’t relate to any dragons, until the last 2.

    These 2 should marry, then their offspring – Tiaquetz might be my dragon. Honestly Teagan, they are both me.

    If there are no backstories, then it would be difficult for an intuitive reader, like yourself, to get a vision.

    I mean w/o backstories, the creators of the cards are making themselves a bit too, godlike for my liking. Anyway, that’s just me.

    All in all a very fun post. I’m sure many (like me) are looking for their Dragon!

  3. Huanglong is the one I like best, although I share traits with most of them, especially Ladon. A lot of the regular writing convention attendees call me The Con Mom. But I like Huanglong’s looks the best. What’s my name? I need a Cronesboro name or a dragon-friend-y name?

    1. Oh, yes — I can see that, Darlene. There is much more mythology to Ladon than these cards include. I think you would be friends with Marisol (means sunshine) Ladon in Dragons of Cronesboro.   10. I’m at a good place in my life, so I’m going with Tiamet. Plus, it’s blazing hot today, and I would love to frolic in the water, perhaps get a splashing battle going with my wings. All in good fun, of course.

    1. Thanks for coming out to play, Noelle.

      Unfortunately, no. That’s one of my many points of dissatisfaction with this deck — there’s no mythology backstory for the overall deck, and few of the individual cards have any personality or meanings. Their meanings for readings might as well be randomly assigned to the cards. Less than half of the dragons even have names.

  13. My birth month is March so I get the double dragons and my archetype identifies most with Huanglong. Of course, my decades long entrapment with Asian culture demands I choose Huelong, the Black Dragon. Huelong is a water dragon that hides in the depths and shadows. He is loyal, protective, and grants many of his traits to anyone he chooses. The ancient Chinese would perform a formal dance overlooking deep water to summon Huelong. He is considered Yin power because of his association with the mysterious depths and shadows and so he has a calming nature and is considered the most powerful of all dragons.

I kept feeling something wasn’t quite right about that card — and it was the mythology they left out. Thanks for telling about Huelong. Hugs on dragon wings.

      1. I would love to know the mythology of the double dragons. Dragons were shared across all cultures probably because of a very early adaptation by humans. They seem to sit comfortably in our imagination.

  14. Teagan, I will go with Quetzalcoatl. Composed of many “parts,” I’d like to think I can be a chameleon of sorts and blend in to conversations and group meetings as required. Enjoyed visiting with all of these dragons!

  15. I think Ladon is probably the one that fits me best, although there is something about Tiamat that connected with me when I saw it. Thanks, Teagan. A great game and it’s a good way to think about fun things. Have a lovely weekend. Big hugs and love to the Scoobies!

    1. I liked Tiamat too, Dan, and for that reason. There were 28 cards and they used a serpent-style dragon for all of them. That was one of several things that disappointed me with that deck. Thanks for coming out to play. Hugs on dragon wings. 😁
