Hello, all. I hope you’re enjoying a relaxing weekend. Or if it isn’t that low-key, maybe you need a distraction. In that case, how about a little floriography trivia. July will sone be done and I haven’t done a floriography post yet. Also, this post marks a year of the monthly flower posts. I did the first one in August 2025. So, I guess this is the end of the series. Regardless, let’s head down a flowery rabbit hole now.
Flowers of the Month:
You’re familiar with birthstones, right? For instance, if one is born in July (like me) their birthstone is the ruby. There’s a similar thing where flowers are assigned to each month. For July, the birth-month flower is the larkspur. The alternate flower, added in modern days, is the waterlily.
I have never seen a larkspur flower in person, but I’ve been fascinated with them ever since I was a little girl. Why? Nance Drew. I read every Nancy Drew book that I could get my hands on — granted not a lot of them were available to me, but I loved them. One was “Password to Larkspur Lane.”
However, today I’m discussing the flower and its symbology. A larkspur is not exactly a delphinium, but it’s a more delicate cousin. It’s also an annual, rather than a perennial flower. That’s a Wikipedia photo of larkspur, or Consolida ajacis, below.
Floriography
In the language of flowers, larkspur generally represents an open heart or the bonds of strong love. More specific meanings can be applied to its various colors.
- Blue: Dignity, grace, and first-class elegance.
- Purple: First love and romantic attachment.
- Pink: Fickleness, changeability, or contrariness.
- White: A happy nature, joy, and lightheartedness.
Other Symbolism
Each month, I’ve shown animals that are associated with the month. There was a time when there would be only one. Now that search engines have changed so drastically, well… the animals are all over the place. I know I’ve said that before, but for today… for July it seemed to explode. It was everything from woodpeckers and salmon, to crabs and lions, to skunks and badgers, to chupacabras — which are mythology. Seriously… chupa-freakin-cabras.
