Heartfelt thanks to everyone who visited my midweek post to help me choose a book cover for my upcoming nonfiction book. It’s a resource book for authors, but it has loads of 1920s details for trivia lovers, and anyone who simply thinks the Roaring Twenties are the cat’s pajamas!
Previously I showed four cover concepts. Click here for that post. The fourth option was the most popular. It was also my pick (probably…) because it used the same flapper silhouette as another book in the “Author Tool Chest” series, Speak Flapper.
Still feeling the pull to explore ideas, I’ve made one more concept — this one based on that most popular concept. So today, I’m showing those two. For your reference, I’ve showed all of the other related books at the top of this post.
The Previous Idea
Gold flapper dancing

One More Idea
Because everyone “got” my idea with the typewriter, I made it more prominent. The book covers a wide range of 1920s details for any character in a Roaring Twenties setting. So, to show that the book is about more than “flapper girls” I used a man and a woman.

Which of these two do you think works best for the book? Your constructive feedback is welcome. I hope your weekend is the bee’s knees! Hugs.

Hi Teagan, I still like the first cover best. The figure is such fun and appears young and carefree 💛⭐️

I like that description, Robbie. I decided to use that one (although I’ll tweak it a little more). It got the most “votes,” but it’s also the same figure as the one on Speak Flapper — and Speak Flapper continues to sell steadily each month. So I hope it will help the new book too. I hope you’ve had a thriving Thursday. Hugs.

Hi Teagan, I am so happy to hear that Speak Flapper continues to sell. Great news. I’m glad you have decided on a cover. I do like this cover very much. I will review the glowing pigs book and I have the flowers and fans one coming up soon.

I like the first. The guy in the second could be from the 30s or 60s The fedora isn’t quite right. Also the flapper should be more prominent as in the first

Thanks, John. I had the same thought about the guy’s hat and clothes. Although the fedora was gaining steam in the 1920s along side the bowler, homburg, and flat cap. So I kept him. Regardless, since the same dancing flapper is on “Speak Flapper” and it’s steadily sold books for six years now… I guess I should stick with her regardless of anything that makes sense to me — because my brain isn’t wired the same way as other people’s. That’s one reason why I like to get feedback and the “whys” of other people’s choices. Hugs.

I still partial to A because of the detail, which is needed to bringing a character to life. Of today’s options, I prefer the dancing flapper. The people in the other one are just standing there. Good luck with your choice!

Thanks, Liz. Hugs. Although, since their (especially the man) feet are in motion, unless he’s a flamingo standing on one foot, I would have thought they were on their way to or from a speakeasy. But I don’t dance my way from one spot to the next. My back couldn’t take the Lindy Hop, and my knees would get twisted with the Charleston. LOL.

You’re welcome, Teagan. I could do some serious damage to my person if I attempted to dance from one place to the next.

I like the one with just the flapper (I really like her) but the one with the man does send the message that your resources aren’t for female characters only. Still, I usually ignore the “you should do this” advice and go with the cover I like.

Thanks, Dan. In these discussions, I find what people *don’t like* is as interesting and often as helpful as what they do like. (Except for the occasional comment that comes across as “jackassery” and gets deleted.) The only drawback is that I can never know if people are considering from a perspective of “What would I buy if I were looking for this kind of resource” (rather than just what’s pretty). Of course I assume the best reasoning from everyone. Regardless… logically, the dancing flapper is the same figure as the one on Speak Flapper — and Speak flapper has steadily sold books for 6 years… so maybe it’s the one to use, if for no other reason. Hugs.

I like the first one because it portrays a flapper so nicely – and without a man!

I prefer the couple. You might also add a car as well. But I still prefer more color than just the black and gold. But that’s just me. 🤣😎🙃

I also prefer number 1 (and so does my mother, so two votes there). I like the idea of featuring a man somewhere (or perhaps some male accessory), but I do like the original flapper. Best of luck, Teagan! Big hugs and love to the Scoobies! (Oh, and I also like the second cover, but I think the first one has the edge, yes).

What a wonderful update and such a creative process behind your book cover choices. Both concepts beautifully capture the Roaring Twenties spirit, and it’s great how you’re also thinking about representing more than just one character style from that era. The attention to detail and consistency across your “Speak” series really stands out. Wishing you the very best with your final choice—it already feels like a truly exciting and engaging project!

I still prefer #1 but I like Linda’s idea of including a dancing man. I think we are all in love with your flapper, and she needs to be on the cover. xo

Thanks, Darlene. I was actually working on that first, but the pair took up too much space. The ratios were all wrong. I’d have to remove the typewriter and that defeats the purpose. Hugs. 🤗

I agree, you have to keep the typewriter! I know this book has more than flapper info, but she represents the era, and it’s not misleading to have her, on her own, on the cover. But that’s just my two cents!!

Well expressed, Darlene. Plus, she’s on the first book of the series, and that helps with consistency/”branding.”

I am with number one even though I find the typewriter too large. The second has the typewriter in reverse 🤔
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thanks, Brian. The thing is, the typewriter is kinda of more important than the dancer, because of the book being about writing.
LOL, yes, the second typewriter is reversed. The carriage return was in my way. 😅 Hugs.

I think I see what you’re saying though. The two are competing with each other. There’s something off in the composition balance. That’s good feedback.
