Happy End of Summer?

Ann-Margaret Elvis Presley 1960s Las Vegas by Teagan via Night Cafe

Hello, all.   Across the globe, we don’t all have the same holidays.  Some are similar but fall on different days.  It’s a holiday weekend where I am, but maybe not for you.  So, instead of Labor Day wishes, I’m just going to wish everyone a happy End of Summer!  Although that doesn’t feel right either.  It’s about 98° F where I am…  Summer isn’t ready to give us a break yet.

Labor Day here came to represent the unofficial end of summer.  So, my mind went back to 1984 and Don Henley singing “The Boys of Summer” (video below).

Funny…  I used to have a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses, just like in the song. That was during the 15 minutes when I had a perfect body.  I wore those Wayfarers with a little yellow bikini.  If I had known then, what I know now…  However, I wouldn’t go back through that door, even if I could.

Memory of those Ray Bans and my yellow swimsuit sent my imagination back to a year that I was too small to remember.  The video below is from the 1964 film, “Viva Las Vegas.” Elvis Presley and Ann-Margaret are singing “The Lady Loves Me.”

Out on the road today, I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac

A little voice inside my head said, “Don’t look back, you can never look back”

I thought I knew what love was, what did I know?

Those days are gone forever, I should just let them go but…

(“The Boys of Summer” verse 3, by Don Henley)

Even though I don’t participate in the “Stream of Consciousness Saturday” posts, I guess that’s what this ramble of nonsense was, here at the end of summer.

Friendly comments are welcome.   Hugs!

  1. Happy end of summer to you Teagan!

The last 3 weeks will be my fave, as it won’t be too hot to go for long walks.

It’s Labour Day up here, as well. There’s are big deal Air Shows all long weekend, and some of the planes fly right over our place, and quite low I might add. Needless to say their deafening roar has Misha disconcerted.

Thank you for the songs! I don’t recall either, but I do remember watching Viva Las Vegas one late night, may years ago.

HUGS to you and the Scoobies!

    1. Hi Resa. I’m so sorry about the noisy air traffic. That would have me at my wits’ end. It’s not quite the same thing, and certainly not as intense as an air show, but the flyboys at the Air Force base near here often fly over making sonic booms, that shake the whole house. The bad thing is that they fly over neighborhoods when they could be going over the missile range that’s in their own backyard — and it covers 2.3 MILLION acres.
But it sounds like you have pleasant weather coming up. Enjoy. Hugs winging back to you, Misha, and your rocker-man.

      1. I was in a tunnel when they went overhead today..Wow…
        Sonic Booms? Good grief!
Well, speaking of Misha and Rocker Boy… time to get cooking!
Home made pizza and salad tonight… and tuna feast for Misha!
        HUGS!

        1. Inside a tunnel with jet noise overhead?! I would have had a panic attack. The vibrating noise must have been horrible.

Yep, sonic booms. Sometimes they go for weeks without doing it. Other times there are ten in a day.

The pizza sounds delicious. I actually did that Friday, artichoke veggie pizza (although I’m not vegetarian). Hmmm what’s for dinner here? I’ll think of something. 🙂 🐱

  2. This was a firehose of memories for me Teagan. Starting with the 1964 movie and working up to Don Henley’s song. First marriage, first house, first job, first promotion , first child, second child, and second marriage. Can never go back became a mantra. Wouldn’t change a ting. Thanks for this. I hold the end of summer wish until the temps are in the 70s. Happy Labor Day.

    1. I’m happy to know they were good memories, John. I’m with you about the temperatures. To me, 60s and low 70s are perfect. I’d be glad to have that year-round. Thanks for spending part of your weekend here. Happy Labor Day to you and yours too. Hugs.

  3. I think we’ve escaped the summer of 2025 and its seemingly endless heatwaves. I no longer care much about Labor Day, but it used to be a pivotal point in my year. The nature of my work meant that the time from Labor Day until Christmas was a predictable kind of busy – I don’t miss that. I’ll enjoy the cooler temperatures (although I expect one more heat wave) and I look forward to autumn. I hope your weather mellows a bit and you can enjoy some cooler days. I enjoyed listening to Elvis, and I’ll cue up Boys of Summer after I post this comment.

Have a great weekend, Teagan. Hugs!

    1. Thanks, Dan. I’ve worked hard this weekend, but it was satisfying.
Yes, growing up on the southeast and then in DC, there was always at least one more heatwave after Labor Day, so I imagine it’s similar for you. Here’s to autumn. Cheers! Hugs winging back to you.

  4. I love that clip from Viva Las Vegas. I used to have an Ann Margaret paper doll with her bathing suits and other cool outfits. Happy end of summer. Like you, we will have at least another month of summer.

    1. Hi Darlene. Oh, blast from the past — I used to have paper dolls, but haven’t thought of it in ages. Although mine were just generic — I didn’t have any celebrity or TV show ones.
I loved the ending of that scene with her pushing him into the pool. LOL, but the really impressive part was that Ann-Margaret was walking on that diving board in those skinny-high-heels. Have a splendid new week. Hugs.

  5. Not Labor Day here, and, the summer is not ready to go yet either, but we are reaching the end of the Local Festival here, so it’s a good weekend to celebrate as well. Thanks for the wonderful songs, and the cheerful images (and I haven’t watched one of Elvis’s films in ages, but I liked them as well). Thanks, Teagan, big hugs and love to Daphne and Velma. And thanks for the Speak Flowers and Fans wonderful book. I’m savouring it slowly… ♥

  6. The Boys Of Summer is a great song. My mom loved Elvis, so I remember her taking us to see Viva Las Vegas in the late 60s when I was 9 or 10. We ended up going to see a lot of his films in the late 60s and early 70s. I think Elvis was in like a million films, it seems. Of course, Labor Day was when everyone went back to school. But now, schools have been in session for a month already in NM. The thing is, as I get older, the more I look back and keep looking back.

    1. That sounds like a positive memory, Tim. Thanks for sharing it. I think most moms back then liked Elvis — whether or not they admitted it. In my town we always went back before Labour Days, but every year we were making up for snow days.
That “rearview mirror” does have a way of drawing one’s attention… Hugs.

  7. Happy End of Summer and Labor Day, Teagan!
You’re right, best not look back but if you find that pick of you when you were big as a minute for a minute with you yellow sun glasses, bring it on!! A little shameless promotion is always worth sharing! Hooray for you!
