Hello, everyone.  I hope you’ve had a good week so far.  Today I have my first guest in the Re-Inventionators series of posts I mentioned a couple of weeks ago.  These posts will be about life changes, self-identity, reinvention, and such.

If you want to know what prompted me to make up the word re-inventionator, and the reason why I realized I had to “hit my re-set button,” read my recent post.  An update to that post: I still don’t know “Who the hell I am anymore,” but I’m beginning to feel that person, even if I can’t see or hear her.  Strange though it may seem to you, hitting the reset button for my hair color seems to have been the right first step.  Neutral… a midpoint… a “compass rose” place where I will take whichever direction to find the current, new, post-multiple-life-changes me.

The reinvention robots will be on hand for these posts, but the star attractions are my guests.

My “re-inventionator” guest today is fellow author, Olga Núñez Miret.  Olga and I have been friends for a number of years — I have to remind myself that we’ve never actually met, because it certainly does not feel that way.  When I had the sudden epiphany that I needed to reinvent myself (again), and figured that I was far from the only one who had gone through such changes, Olga was the first person to come to mind.  She tells a little about some of her history on the About page of her blog, where she posts excellent, mindful book reviews.  Below is just one of her wide range of terrific books and genres.

20 Things I’ve Learned from My Patients. This is a bilingual book.  Olga included both the English and Spanish translations together, in one volume. For me, that made it a way to practice Spanish in addition to being a great read.

There are moments when we all seem to wonder about our identity, about who we are, and I’ve recently been wondering about it too.

Over the years, I’ve been many things. Some of them, more or less briefly.  (I was a departmental secretary at the university where I was studying in the UK for only a few weeks; and also worked at several bookshops in Hay-on-Wye for over a month. I’ve taught different subjects and in different capacities over the years); some longer (a doctor, a psychiatrist touching on different specialities, settling finally on forensic psychiatry for a few years; a published author and translator…).

There are some that I’ve been (so far) from birth: daughter, cousin, from Barcelona…  

There are some pretty obvious (and expected) ones I’ve never been: sister, mother, aunt, wife…

There are some I hope I’ll carry on being forever: reader, writer, friend, godmother, listener, storyteller, student, someone who cares, someone who loves to walk, explore, and wander around.

What am I now? Thankfully, I am some of the things I hope I’ll carry on being forever, and some others I took up more recently, like a volunteer (mostly as a reporter of a local radio station, Sants 3 Ràdio, occasionally participating in charity event organised locally), a reviewer (mostly of books but of other things as well), and, even more recently, a carer.  I love researching topics, taking part in local events and interviewing people. It’s always interesting and different, even when you cover similar events over the years.

Caring, is more difficult, and I know it is a long-term thing that will keep changing and getting harder. Despite all that, I hope this is a role I’ll keep doing for a long time. I’ll need to grow more patient and resilient, but I’ll keep working on it.

I don’t think this is the life I imagined I would be living right now. I am not sure if it is worse or better. It is different.

What do I need now? Health (mental and physical. It’s easy to say, but not so easy to achieve, I know), a good book or a hundred, a friend or two, something to engage my brain and keep me busy but not stressed.

Who am I? Well, who is to say? And, at my age (I’ve just turned sixty), I don’t care that much about what others think of me, and once I’m not there… I’ll care even less.

    1. I’m happy you enjoyed it, Tim.
      Haha, I get a kick out of making the Re-inventionator droids. Although it’s surprising how hard it is to make the app give them a metal face. (And I shouldn’t be surprised by now). Just like with every time I try for a sort of “avatar” for myself. Whether I tell it curvy, plump, or fat, it adds miles of exposed cleavage, no matter what I say about necklines or “modest clothes.” Very frustrating. And Wonderland… It only gives mushrooms and deranged grins on characters — so I still haven’t made the video for the recording of White Rabbit you so kindly produced for me. Enough of my AI gripe. Back to my other mug of coffee. Hugs.

      1. I know your frustrations. I tried together three different AI models to draw an analog clock showing 7:00. They could do other times but not 7. It turns out people with various types of neurological problems either can’t draw an analog clock at all, or some who can draw a clock can’t draw it showing 7:00. I asked ChatGPT if AI has the same problem as people with brain damage.

        I have the same problem with getting plunging necklines. Blame it on the deranged developers who programmed AI. All the women tend to look like lonely nerdy fantasy girls.

    2. Thanks for your kind words, Darlene. It was the second year I covered that event on Palm Sunday, and everybody was taking pictures with the donkey (his name is Valent, brave in Catalan), and I had joked with my editor that I’d interview the donkey, so I had to ask the owner to take that picture!

  12. Caring is the hardest and the sweetest thing I’ve ever done. From my children to my mother, protecting the safety and dignity of other people is an exercise in empathy, creativity, and stamina. But it sounds to me like you’ve been a carer all your life in many different ways. I know that, when you find who you are, you’ll be proud of what you find.

  17. It was nice to learn a little more about Olga. I only know her from our mutual interaction with your (Teagan’s) blog and books, and some posts here and there. It’s interesting to follow a person’s journey. Good luck to both of you as you continue discovering and exploring.
