Christmas in July: Fun Songs

Eartha Kitt by Teagan via Playground

Welcome back to Christmas in July!  While not exactly sad, many “winter holiday” songs are serious.  My question to you is this:  “What’s your favorite fun or humorous Santa song?

One of mine is “Santa Baby” as performed by Eartha Kitt.  She was also my favorite Catwoman on the original Batman TV series.  (Well… Okay, so it’s a tie between her and Julie Newmar for the Catwoman thing…  Both were wonderful in the role, but so very different.  No, I still can’t decide…)

By the way, as a little girl, my grandmother was horrified that I liked Eartha Kitt.  She thought the performer was utterly scandalous.  Maybe that’s why kid-me liked her.

I had never seen this video (below) of Santa Baby until I started writing this post.  I’m very sorry If you aren’t able to view it, because it’s fabulous.  It’s an animated version of the story in the song, and Ms. Kitt singing it.  One thing that I particularly liked was that it touches on her Catwoman role.  I’d love to make the song into a story of my own, but I’m not sure how much writer-mojo and energy I have right now.

    1. Not at all, Selma — Beyond spreading whimsy and fun, my intention with Christmas in July was to let people share about any of their works that relate to the theme. Yours is a lovely post. I’m delighted that you enjoyed Hullaba Christmas! Thanks for bringing your link. Hugs.

  1. Can’t beat a bit of shameless self promotion, Teagan. I wish I had more time to spare to visit, The Santa Baby video is brilliant, isn’t it? She was the epitome of style and glamour.

      1. Perhaps we’ve both lost our minds, Teagan!
Resa was a chuckaboo to make me such a fab gown, and bring me here.
Of course, now I’d like another.
        Hugs,

    1. Hi, John. I’m with you on the favorite song. I held back because this post started when I ran into that terrific animated video. However, my favorite is Kurt Russell’s cover. There’s a link in my reply to Sharukh. Thanks for the Elvis link. I was just about to go looking for it. Big hugs.

  2. Eartha Kitt is a favorite. She made this song so sexy! Other than Santa’s Coming in Whirly Bird opr All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth (real songs), I do like (and here everyone can groan) Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You!

  3. I like the Eartha Kitt version of Santa Baby, but prefer Julie Newmar as Cat Woman. Preferences.

Speaking of which, “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” is my favorite fun holiday song. I love to sing along to it, always puts a smile on my face.

    1. She started out on Broadway in the 40s, then had several hit records in the 50s (here and in the UK). However, when she made anti-Vietnam War statements at a White House luncheon, her career tanked. Many singers have recorded Santa Baby, but her version is the only one I liked. The others just hit an annoying chord with me. Happy Caturday to the Clowder. Hugs.

  4. This is a fun post, Teagan. I did not know Eartha Kitt played Cat Woman in the original Batman. My mother had some of her music, and I think I remember this song being on a compilation album from many singers. She has a beautiful voice. My favorite song during the holidays is Let it Snow.

    1. Let It Snow is a fun song — especially for a kid like me in a place where we only got a couple of “good” snowfalls a year. Thanks for visiting, Dan. Don’t work too hard. As with the end of The Outer Limits, you are in control of the buttons. Okay I took a lot of liberty with that but… Hugs.

  5. Wow! Lovely song, Teagan, and luckily I was able to watch the video. Yes, I see why you liked Eartha Kitt. She had a very distinctive voice and her performances were unique. I don’t like many standard Christmas songs, but there go two that wouldn’t fit into that. Frank Kelly’s version of the Twelve Days of Christmas (this video has the lyrics as well, because his accent and the way he gets more and more agitated as the song progresses could make it a big difficult to follow), and the Pogues ‘Fairytale of New York’. I hope nobody gets offended, although I’m not sure if the links will work.

  6. Well, I’m not a religious man. I mean I believe in God with my own set of ideas so I don’t buy all those money-making practices done in the name of religion, you know what I mean. All those scary tactics for a torturous accommodation in hell and whatnot. However, back to the Christmas topic. Ever since I married Sarah I have become more interested in Christmas. It is now my favorite time of the year. I decorate my Christmas tree with zeal and pleasure, I also post them on my Instagram. Obviously, due to space limitations, my Christmas tree is not as huge as others, but size is not relevant, is it? Now since I’m a music person, I listen to a lot of Christmas songs. I play plenty of carols and songs by Boney M like Mary’s Boy Child Jesus Christ. However, my favorite is….drum roll….Santa Claus is Back in Town by Elvis Presley. Sarah loves Mary’s Boy Child Jesus Christ by Boney M.

    1. I know what you mean. I was surprised when one of my bosses was going on about her Christmas decorations, because I knew that she was in no way religious at all. When I asked her, she said “Oh, it’s totally secular.” I think the decorating is that way for a lot of people — secular rather than religious.
I remember you chatting about your Christmas tree. That’s so cool. Yay for “Santa Claus is Back in Town”! That’s actually my favorite too, but I didn’t want my writeup to jump around. I love Kurt Russel’s version from a movie a few years ago. Maybe that’s partly because it was such a great surprise to see him making a movie again and clearly having a great time with the song.

      Hugs to you and Sarah.

      1. Yup, this was from a movie The Christmas Chronicles (2018) on Netflix. At least, I watched it on Netflix and it was fun. In terms of movies, I believe I watch Home Alone almost every year during Christmas time. Decorating Christmas Tree is a lot more than just religious thing now, I think. I see a lot of people (non-Christians) buying Christmas decorations in various markets. I visit all these markets annually to check if I can get my hands on some funky decoration to add to the tree. On a personal level, for me it is also a sort of competition. I’ll tell you more about it on another platform. 🙂
