Lexica

Hello, everyone.

Before I get to the point, we do have a response to the creativity challenge.  It’s from fellow author Geoff Le Pard. Don’t miss his is hysterically Ruthless response. Be sure to check it out.

Anyway, you aren’t mistaken — I was late publishing this post.  I’ve been banging my head against the (usually) figurative wall, trying to write.  It’s not lack of ideas.  Not lack of inspiration.  My “stuff” has been in the way, big time.  That’s just the way it is.

I got past the title issue.  The new title actually gives me some structure for the plot of Part-2.  Atonement, Bad Bishop.  For a “bad bishop” situation in chess, the position of friendly pawns prevent the bishop moving.  That gives me all sorts of story ideas.

And yet, here I sit…  I wasn’t going to do a post today.  Then I was thinking about the musical-magic of the new character, Nix, and I suddenly remembered how many times my story-writing gets fueled by a mental soundtrack.  So, a moment ago after prolonged and excessive meowing demands from Velma for attention, I started this post, inviting you to share your own musical ideas.

Lexica

The right song really sticks around in my head, even years later, when I think of a story.  Often the song comes first and brings the story along with it.

So, to those of you who know the strange little town of Atonement, TN and its odd inhabitants, tell me what songs make you think of the town.  What song makes you think of a particular character?  What about the jeweled chess pieces — do they make you think of music?

If you’re new, then try to imagine this quirky, magical little town, infested with supernaturals. What kind of song do you think of with it?

Lexica

You know my main purpose in blogging is to engage the readers — to make you part of the creation.  Be sure to leave a comment mentioning a song that makes you think of Atonement, TN.  Hugs.

        1. Duplicates are fine — it’s like voting. Plus, it reinforced an idea the song gave me for handling a relationship between two characters that I had not previously settled on how to bring it into the story. This gave me a different and more interesting idea. 😊

    1. Great minds think alike, Resa. 😉 Although “Black Magic Woman” has been in my head since the late 90s for a different unfinished novel. It’s too deeply rooted in that story for me to reuse it. “Hotel California” just might take me somewhere — even if I can never leave. LOL. Hmm… seriously though, that might work for Old Green Eyes, or maybe as a dark past for one of the good guys. Hmmm….
      Thanks for commenting. Big hugs.

    1. I always liked that song, Geoff. Hmmm… I’ve yet to reveal the nature/identity of the good guys’ pawns. They’re pretty fearsome and downright gross, but somehow in my twisting mind, that song works for them. (Bheema’s “secret identity” as Ganesha, they are ganas.) Hugs!

    1. What a wonderful song. (I find Karaoke therapeutic, though my cats disagree that it’s just me caterwauling. That’s a fun one to sing with all the changes and ups and downs.) I like the idea for this story. Unexpected, but it works. Maybe a sentimental moment for Pepper, since she just went to the “other side” when she was almost killed.

      1. No you’re not. I had a Morrison poster at Uni but soon realised I couldn’t love with his eyes. They ‘read’ me… even rolled up. I gave it to the Catholic priest who taught philosophy and was a tutor in hall. He loved the Doors and said, after the Seminary, nothing scared him.

        1. Haha! That’s too funny.
The only good thing about that nightmare was that I was dreaming that if I could scream loud enough, then someone would save me from Andy Warhol. So I woke up screaming. Scared the crap out of my psycho ex-husband, and then I went back to sleep. (I had screamed so I was safe. LOL) Psycho-ex on the other hand, fell out of bed terrified. Ah… the moments worth remembering. There actually are a couple.

    1. Great song choice, Robbie, especially with the chess element. I always liked the weirdness of that song. My favorite Jefferson Airplane song was “Somebody to Love.” Powerful vocals from Grace Slick. Yes… terrific song for the story. Many thanks and big hugs!

        1. Ah… so many stories… so little time. I know.
I was so glad to read that you were back to work on that story. You had so much work and thought invested in it. I have a block on my Wheel of Fortune story, from a few years ago, but that’s because I was (semi-secretly) writing a happier childhood for myself, letting the heroine be sort of me. It was too personal.
With this serial, it’s not exactly a block. It’s just that all my “stuff” keeps derailing me. I do think the songs are going to help. I have lots of idea flashes in my mind, flitting around like autumn leaves falling. Take care.

  1. I see Jennie also thought about Rodgers & Hammerstein, because the first thing that came to my mind was ‘Bali Ha’i’ about the magical island in South Pacific, so here it comes. I’m off to check Geoff’s post. Good luck and I hope you get plenty of inspiration, Teagan. And love to Velma and Daphne.

    1. I’m intrigued, Olga — thanks! I loved what I know of Rodgers & Hammerstein, but other than being familiar with the title, I didn’t know Bali Ha’i. I see a Youtube video right now, that mentions a Bloody Mary character. Maybe she could be the Wendigo!
Thanks for sharing the post. Daphne & Velma send you loud purrs. Big hugs.

    1. Oooooh! I like that idea, GP. That one really clicks with me. A great theme for Pepper. And the “I’ve always been in your mind” lyric is very similar to something I would have Nix saying. (The powers of a nix include great strength, music, and telepathy.) You were tuned-in, my friend. This might have started my mental wheels turning! Big hugs!

    1. Oooh, thanks, John. I admit that I’m not current on music, TV or much of anything. I like Taylor, but wasn’t familiar with this song. It works well with the story. The official video is beautiful too, and atmospheric. Terrific choice. It might create a relationship for Pepper. Ah… but which? 😀 Big hugs.

            1. Haha! You two are killing me. Something weird triggered a panic attack a little while ago, so I answered the call of a martini. I even used my Magellan Blue Iris gin. My new favorite since Roku went up to $185 a bottle. Although Magellan seems to be taking that course too.

                1. Ah I will have to leave you to your mutual sousing. I gave up alcohol in 1989 and while my father fought a Sterling rearguard to persuade me it was merely a fad and would eventually go the same way as Betamax videos and sock suspenders, I have held out since. So what gin tastes like is one of the mysteries of the universe to me, up there with the aerodynamics of the bumble bee and the button fly.

    1. Thanks, Tim. There’s some gorgeous stuff at Lexica.com. I’ll look up that song — thanks. I only remember a handful of songs from Cream, but I loved Eric Clapton with them and Stormy Monday. I got hooked on it when I lived in Albuquerque and commuted to the west side, playing it over and over, while I focused on different elements of it. Wonderful as the vocals and guitar are, I was awed by the bass. Hugs.

        1. I’ve used up most of my Internet time for today, but I’ll check it out. I really can’t imagine the song. (I had to resort to T-mobile Internet, a horrible dishonest scam, and it’s very little Internet for a lot of money. But something is “wrong” either with this house or the exact place where it sits. I can’t receive much of anything.) Looking forward to checking it out.

  2. I’m so glad to know music fuels your writing. Well, music is universal and pierces the heart and the brain simultaneously. How electric! Hans Christian Andersen said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” What songs come to mind? From Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, “When you Walk Through the Storm”, Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood”, and “Walk Right In, Sit Right Down” by the Rooftop Singers. Hugs!

    1. Oh, Jennie, that is so profound — “music pierces the heart and the brain simultaneously.” Beautifully said. Those are great songs. “In the Mood” always puts me in a positive mood, and I haven’t thought of “Walk Right In, Sit Right Down” in ages, but I liked it a lot. Hmmm… the nix (new character) has strange slit earlobes according to lore, so he probably hides them with long hair. The “baby let your hair hang down” part of that song would be fun for him. Hugs winging back to you.

  3. I love the idea of having a soundtrack to go along with stories, I always have music in mind when I write, and very often when I read. So, I’m going to offer two songs. The first song is a song I thought of when reading ‘Atonement in Bloom’ – I realize the theme behind the lyrics don’t necessarily match, but I think music is a good fit. Electric Light Orchestra – “Strange Magic” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Wtj59opWKg

As for the chess pieces in the current serial, my mind goes straight to Yes – “I’ve Seen All Good People” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfgPEh2J9aI – I have loved that song since it was first released, and “Move me on to any black square” means we’re talking about a bishop.

    1. Ah ha! Thanks for the chess tip, Dan. I didn’t know that. Oooh… as I listen/read the lyrics, “I’ve Seen All Good People” really works for Pepper and Bheema, particularly with the karma reference, considering who Bheema really is.
“Strange Magic” is great too. The lyrics don’t *not* work. It’s a terrific general fit for the story. I didn’t know it was part of an animated movie from 2015 until I started looking just now. Very cool. Many thanks, Dan. Hugs.
