Thursday Doors to Indie Books
Welcome all. I hope the temperature is not too oppressive wherever you are. Frankly, it’s been rough here for what seems like forever.
Books are doors to the imagination. When you open a book by an independent (indie) author, you open a door to… What? It could be anything! That’s because indie authors write in every imaginable genre. Within those book covers you might find science fiction or romance. Memoirs or murder might await you. You might even open a door to… steampunk!
My doors today are meant to encourage you to explore the worlds of steampunk. While I was privileged to introduce some of my readers to that genre, I expect that many of you are not familiar with it. Steampunk is only one of many “punk” genres. If you want to learn about all those punks, a few years ago I did a post about them. Click here for The Punk of Punk.
Here’s something I’ve been keeping quiet about. I’m about halfway through making the illustrations for a steampunk novel of my own. It will publish later this year. I’m afraid to estimate when, so I’ll be mysterious about it for now. Although a few of you have guessed what it will be, and you’ll be reunited with some old friends. More on that later.
Thanks for opening this door. Hugs.

This is a work of fiction. Characters, names, places, and incidents are either the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, locales, or events is entirely coincidental.

Yes! I love the Steam Punk.
I’d say – Bring it on!
However, I understand it is a WIP.
Enjoy the process, Teagan! Hugs

Your illustrations sound terrific, Teagan. Well, let me put that a different way. If you are doing them, they will be terrific.

Well… It’s the “computer generated illustrations” app and me, John. Although it’s still a lot of work, to get the CGI to produce what I want. Often I have to Photoshop the results too. So I’ll take some of the credit.
I’m not saying a lot because every time I talk about a novel in progress (even if it’s just editing) I jinx myself and something happens that I don’t finish, but you’ll remember The Delta Pearl. I’ve been making fairly consistent progress for the past few months. So I thought a few teasers might be okay with my jinx. Thanks for opening this door. Hugs.

I would recommend keeping the Jinx at bay. Say only enough that will keep the bugger in the basement.

Ha! The bugger in the basement. That could be a great title. Or if “grunge rock” comes back, the name of a group. Or maybe a country song. 😀

Or a medical condition. 😁 Thanks, Teagan

Would you consider the photography in the top half of the screen to be steampunk or in the spirit of steampunk? https://waltercrump.com/galleries/pinhole/

Hi, Liz. I’d say it has a steampunk ascetic, with the lack of modern technology and particularly because of the gears. Some steampunk is quite dark, and the photos fit that mood. As Jaq commented, the genre holds a lot of variety. With books and stories, it is marked by misfit characters and “Steam Era” technology. It’s also usually kind of fanciful.
Thanks for opening this door. Hugs.

I do like the idea of illustrations throughout. I’ll have to talk to my artist about the sequels.

You just gave me a big smile, Noelle. A few people here will remember this story as a blog serial, but it was before your time. I’m having fun with the illustrations. Hugs.

I was introduced by the song, Airship Pirates by Abney Park, which led to writing my own Steampunk novel about – you guessed it – airship pirates!
There’s a lot of diversity within Steampunk so looking forward to your take on it.

It’s great to see you, Jaq. I don’t know the song, but airship pirates sound fabulous. I’d love to check out your book, and I’m sure my readers would too. If you get a chance, come back with a link to it.
Yes, there is a huge amount of diversity in steampunk now. Many of the older stories have a literal take on it, accentuating all the smog and soot from presumed coal fires that produced the steam. The story I’m polishing (illustrating) is a more opulent take on the genre, with a touch of magic. So I’ll bill it as a steampunk-fantasy.
Thanks for opening this door. Hugs.

I like these doors, Teagan and I am looking forward to an illustrated bit of steampunk. You did introduce me to the genre, and I’ve enjoyed every opportunity I’ve had to read your stories and serials. Good luck with that project, and thanks for sharing these doors.

You are so kind, Dan. Thanks for saying that. I admit that I needed a lift. You’d think all the super-hot air here would float me like a balloon, but it’s doing the opposite. But like they say, “This too shall pass.” I’m looking forward to winter!
I’m making at least a little progress each day. Most people would tell me that I should be promoting it in advance, but every time I try to do that (with any novel in progress) my priorities end up shifting and I don’t finish. I hope your day is going well. Hugs.

I have the same issues with advance promotion. I’m trying to get ahead of this next one, but I’m not in control of all the moving parts.

Right now, I doubt that I’ll ever actively promote anything again. Just announcements here and on Facebook. I’ll promote others of course.

Thanks, Olga. Yes, you were “aboard” for the serial version of this story, and your *papyrus* “random reader thing” played an important role in the plot. Thanks for opening this door. Hugs. ❤

Some years ago, I had heard about Steampunk, but didn’t know that much about it. So I bought the animated film ‘Steam Boy’ on DVD, and was completely captivated by it. I recommend it to anyone who wants to watch the genre, as well as reading about it.
Best wishes, Pete. x

Great choice, Pete. “Steam Boy” is often used as an example of steampunk. A live action steampunk film that is also a great example is “Hugo.” It’s magnificent. Thanks for opening this door. Hugs.
