Welcome back to my sanctuary, everyone.  Ha.  Not that kind of look.  Although I’ve had my eye on an idea.  You see, I’m still not feeling up to starting a new “three things” style blog serial.  However, I’ve been thinking about preselecting the setting for the next serial, and the setting I’ve been considering is my fictional, supernatural-infested little town of Atonement, Tennessee.

Atonement, Tennessee was the name of the first novel I published. (Although not the first one I wrote.)  That was back in 2012.  Abruptly, I thought I should update that series with an all new look.  The series includes two novels, one of which is translated into Spanish by Olga Núñez Miret — and a brief collection of snort stories featuring the glowing pigs characters.

Here’s an image I created previously that shows the original book covers I made for the series. I was always fond of those covers.  However, it’s time for a change, for some “rebranding.”

With that many books, and the potential of more (someday), it took a lot of planning in regard to what images to use. Not to mention the difficulty of finding that many (and more for future) related images in the style I chose.  Then I made more work by choosing two different styles — and having to decide.

The Atonement series is urban fantasy — that is to say, set in the modern-day real world, but with magic.  The novels have plenty of suspense, but they don’t drift into horror at all. So, I wanted the new covers to bring out the whimsy inherent in having a town where many of the characters are secretly supernatural beings.  Without further ado, here are my new book covers.

  3. Like everyone else I think your covers are very effetive in drawing attention and coaxing the buyer to get the book. Congratulations on all your literary successes, Teagan. Couldn’t happen to a nicer more deserving person.

  4. I like the new covers. There’s an element of graphic novels to your work, so I think they fit that groove as well as the “cozy” one. And I think the colors and type size will grab people’s attention. Best of luck!

  9. Ah serendipity or somesuch. Over the last two years I’ve been trying my hand at an urban fantasy series. Likely three books of which two are written. Book one has been dispatched – tentatively, nervously – to be read for sense and hopefully some merit. In the hope I’ll get a thumbs up, I met the wondrous young man who has done all my book covers last Monday to review my next book and we talked about what we need for the urban fantasy. Seeing your latest iterations has made me think… so thank you Teagan, thank you Atonement for some stimulus

    1. Geoff, you have a great sense of humor and sense of the absurd. That is an asset to urban fantasy storytelling. I’m looking forward to your new series.
      It was Charlaine Harris’ “Southern Vampire” series covers that got me thinking of this style. (Although those books have had other covers after HBO bought the series and made “True Blood.”) I absolutely hated the style for a horror-ish urban fantasy… but the quirky style grew on me.

    1. I’m delighted you enjoyed it, Liz. Thanks for this feedback. When I wrote the stories, my thoughts were focused on the “mystical” aspects and the mythology that loosely inspired them. So I loved the misty curtain being pulled back. Now I’m more aware of the stories being close to “cozy”. The vector graphic/cartoon style covers have become strongly associated with cozies in various genres. I became attracted to that style when I had the sudden strong feeling that I should refresh this series with new covers. Hugs.

  11. How fun to rebrand your books, and you have a great new look, Teagan. I loved these books, everything about them. Atonement would make a great setting for another serial when you have the energy for it. I’ll be lined up to read. Hugs.

    1. Thanks very much, John. This style has really taken hold in the past 10-12 years, particularly for any story that has a sort of “cozy” element. I resisted it for a long time. Even though it’s far from new, the look feels modern to me. I’m happy you think it is a good fit for this series.
