Welcome to my sanctuary, everyone.  To those of you in the USA, I hope you were able to enjoy Independence Day.  To my neighbors to the north, I hope it was a lovely Canada Day.

Thursday Doors, is a weekly feature hosted by Dan Antion.  It allows door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world. Feel free to join in on the fun by creating your own Thursday Doors post each week and then sharing your link at Dan’s blog.

Downright mystified by the amount and variety of written and image products I constantly finished at work, a former boss asked me a question more than once.  “How can you quiet your mind, and write?”

The idea of me having a “quiet mind” made me laugh.  It’s nothing like the image above — a door surrounded by nothing.  I replied, “My mind is never quiet. It’s chaos in there!”  Remembering those conversations, I decided to do a Thursday Doors post about my noisy mind.

Doors to My Author’s Mind

The busy image above is only a fraction of the mental chaos.  In all my stories and novels, published and not, I’ve created nearly 400 characters.  I never know when one of them is going to pop into my head.  My mind is a noisy place. (From front-left, circling up and around, Jinx (on the phone) from Brother Love a Crossroad, Emlyn or any of the hundreds of named characters in Dead of Winter, Pip from the Three Things 1920s stories, young Copper with Cornelis Drebbel, Fiona Finch, an angel-bot and Lulu from Hullaba Lulu, Lilith the cat from Atonement, Tennessee, Luci (more on that in the future), and a fairy from Thistledown, Midsummer Bedlam.) Those are only a few.

Here’s another door into my mind.

Above is a little teaser for my current novel project. You see Luci, who is also in the bottom-right of my noisy mind image.  Excuse me now.  It’s time for me to go back inside that door.  Luci and friends have waited even longer than Emlyn for their story to be finished.  The first version of that one goes back to the 1990s.

Thanks for opening this door.  Hugs on the wing!

  1. It is always so interesting taking another walk through your writings! It would be a unique experience to take a walk through the many paths in your brain! 1 I like your door idea and thank you for opening the doors. Always interesting. Have a great coming week with lots of joy and “fun”. Take care! !

  2. Teagan – to me, chaos is the magic that creates beautiful things that come together out of seemingly unrelated thoughts and ideas. As Friedrich Nietzsche once wrote “One must sill have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” Then there is Paul Cezanne who said, “we live in a rainbow of chaos.” And Carl Jung “In all choose there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order.” It seems that you are in very good company. A marvelous post and great follow-up discussion.

    1. Hi Rebecca, thanks for spending time here today. I hope all is well in beautiful Vancouver.
One of my 6 dead trees is getting sawed up right now. It’s stressful, the noise and dealing with people, but at least 1/6th of that expense is out of the way.
I’m happy that you can have that idyllic view of chaos. Those are beautiful quotes. My mind is actually a terrifying place. Writing is the pressure valve release (or whatever that would be called). Although I choose to let off the pressure in gentler stories than the horror stories I could use for a more accurate representation of that chaos.
Stay safe and well. Hugs on the wing.

      1. Oh Teagan – the definition of chaos is complete disorder and confusion. Idyllic does not come to mind for me. Rather, I am interested in how thinking creatively brings this disorder and confusion to resolution for a time. I have been reading the letters of Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo, which has allowed me to explore this idea. He said that “The only time I feel alive is when I’m painting.” You are a brilliant creative, Teagan. You always add joy to my day.

  3. WoW! So, this is what an author’s mind looks like. Thank you, for opening the door to yours – it shows a lot of clarity despite the chaos. All the very best on your next project.

    1. Thanks, Pat. I never saw this story as a series, I’m not sure if the premise and “world” could support more than one book. Since people have run away with ideas in the past, I’m treading a balance between sharing and not. Right now, I’ve got a unique thing in it. But you know how I love to share, so it’s difficult. o_O I’ll reveal bits as time goes by. Hugs on the wing.

  4. I always appreciate your serving as our guide when we enter Teagan’s Mind. I never know where, or when I might end up. Characters, vehicles, animal friends, supernatural and silly. I’ve met them all, and I’ve enjoyed each one.

I hope you have a nice weekend! I look forward to hearing more about/from Luci.

  6. Thanks for allowing us a peep inside your mind, Teagan. I know you have sometimes written side stories for some of the characters that have appeared in your novels or serials, and I can’t help but wonder in what universe they could all meet… I look forward to hearing more about Luci and catching up with all your projects!
