Wednesday Writing — Cover Reveal for Journey 11

Hello, everyone. As the Journeys of Dead of Winter draw near their end, so does this year.  For my location, the approaching solstice (Halloween, Samhain, and other names) falls halfway between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice.  In most of the countries of Dead of Winter, it also marks the end of one year and the beginning of the next, just as it did for some of our ancestors.  Emlyn’s people called it Galan’gaeaf.  Yes, I made up that name, but I derived it from my research — Nos Galan Gaeaf, a Welsh form of the Scottish Gaelic, relevant to Samhain.

The November issue of Dead of Winter, has a good deal of new material that I’ve added to the original manuscript, written a decade ago. I also got to indulge myself in one of my favorite parts of writing — names.  A new, but very minor, Deae Matres character came with the new prologue. Plus I developed names for two locations that already existed, but were unnamed. Part of the action takes place on one of those, the Sumelazon Escarpment, just outside Pergesca.  Since the Journeys are named for places to which the characters travel, that place also gave Journey 11 its name.

Throughout the Journeys, I’ve left hints that there is more than meets the eye regarding the horse-whisperer equerry to the Deae Matres, Gethin Gwilym.  He is featured in Journey 11, The Sumelazon.

In other news, we’re halfway through October, but author Teri Polen’s festival of horror and suspense is still going strong.  Click over to “Bad Moon Rising” for a fun interview with a different author every day of this month! I’ll be there on the 29th.

One of my favorite days of the year is almost here!

Happy Halloween!

  1. I really like that picture of the horses. I was born on a farm and enjoyed this special feature of the horses, actually very well done. I also like your painting of the beautiful white gown, is there something scary connected with it? ? I am impressed by the number of comments, proof of reader appreciation! ! I would also like to add my appreciation and thank you for all the time and effort you dedicate to this awesome work! !

    1. I’m delighted you enjoyed all of this, Ms Frances. Emlyn’s white gown is part of the story, but it is not a scary part. I was looking for the right model to be Emlyn in white when I found this one. It’s actually to do with Chinese folklore. It’s a hanfu fairy robe.
I would try to tell you more, but my Internet is down again, and doing this with my phone is difficult.

    1. Hi Jacquie. Halloween was my favorite holiday. But I stopped doing anything for any holiday years ago. No religious or political reason — just the way life turned out. I held onto Halloween longer than any of the others though.
Many thanks about the cover. Hugs on the wing.

  2. Thanks, Emille. LOL. The model is from some stock images. I don’t know anything about him. My mind actually has more of a Sean Connery type as Gethin. However, middle-aged models (especially with a sword) are extremely hard to find. I appreciate you spending part of your day here. Hugs on the wing.

  3. Teagan, seeing Gethin again, I’ll add intense warrior eyes. Another protective look toward Emlyn. The white gown is perfect. Her new image. Looking forward to Journey 11. Hugs, my friend. 📚🎶 Christine

        1. LOL. Remember she’s barely 12… but that’s as much as I’ll say.
That’s kind of you to say, Christine. But I hope you’ll take your time and read them in order. Each one picks up where the last left off. So some parts might not quite make sense if a reader skips journeys. 🙂 ❤

          1. I’ll resist jumping ahead. It’s not a good idea. I’d forgotten Emlyn is a young girl at the beginning. And doesn’t age. I’m committed to reading faster. It will be my scheduled break. As you know, I’m into heavy final editing with my editor. She’s putting me through the paces with changing scenes to up the tension & foreshadowing. It seriously changes the main character’s real relationship history with a man right at the beginning. But, readers want conflict & tension, don’t they? I need to let my imagination fly, like you do! Now I’m committed to follow Emlyn’s journey to the not so liked white dress! 📚🎶

            1. Just remember that it’s *your* story, Christine, to tell in whatever way you want to tell it.
Right. The overall manuscript actually takes place within less than a year for the story timeline. Okay, one tiny hint (because it doesn’t make a spoiler for anyone else who might read comments). It’s not the dress that she doesn’t like, but what they do to her hair. 😉 ❤

              1. (laughing)…Love it! Now I really have to read the Journeys faster, to get to what do they do to Emlyn’s hair that she doesn’t like? Thanks, Teagan. I just reviewed my editor’s additions and I’m blown away by her expansion of emotion and setting in the story. She keeps what I’ve written though, and goes further! All good. 📚🎶❤️

    1. Thanks, Diana. I hope you’re enjoying your blog-break. It’s always fun to visit Teri at Bad Moon Rising. It’s been enough weeks since I sent my responses, that I don’t even remember which questions I answered. LOL. I might surprise myself. Hugs on the wing!

    1. Thank you kindly, Michael. I’m very happy you like this cover.
New Mexico has a lot of intense wind. The past few days we’ve had 25mph sustained winds, with gusts of at least 50mph… although it sometimes seems like the gusts are constant. (Part of my gate blew away last night.) One more windy day today, and tomorrow it should be quite nice. The temperatures are nice though. I appreciate you visiting. Hugs on the wing!

  4. We’re 10 journeys into the story, and I am still looking forward to this one as if it’s all new. There’s an excitement around each journey, Teagan and so far, I haven’t been disappointed. I can’t wait for number eleven. I like the cover very much, and I’m interested to learn more about Gethin. I hope your week is going well.

    1. Dan, you gem. That’s probably the best compliment I could hear. Thanks so much about the story — and the cover too.
I almost included a character interview that I wrote with Gethin way back in 2013 and never published. Stay warm and dry (if you can). Hugs on the wing!

    1. Thanks, Priscilla. I hope you’ll enjoy it. This issue has a lot of editing-reorganization. What works fine for a long single book, doesn’t tend to work right for these shorter segments. In working on that, I realized it was a good place to give Genthin more “screen time.”
I appreciate you spending part of your day here. Hugs on the wing!

Winter is Coming and the end is near! Don’t miss Teagan Geneviene’s reveal of the cover for Journey 11 of Dead of Winter, and help her celebrate Halloween by checking her post and also visiting Bad Moon Rising (where she will be interviewed on the 29th)!

    1. Thanks, Olga. The new character is fun, but she’s mostly a device to let me set things up to give Gethin a little more to do. However, if I do a prequel (of sorts) she would be fun to add to it. Yaquib Kara, a Deae Matres, born on the Sumelazon Escarpment, directly in line with the power node. I expect that in her day, she was “butt kickin!” 😉
Happy Halloween to you too. Hugs on the wing!
