The September issue of Dead of Winter ready!

Welcome to my sanctuary.  Try not to let that giant eye worry you.  During the past ten days, I’ve put in so many long hours each day, but I’m on track and here to announce the latest novelette in Dead of Winter. 

To make Dead of Winter suitable to this series format, I’ve made lots of revisions. Although, I have not added many new scenes.  One the few new scenes is the prologue for this volume.

The character Lucetius, or Luce as Emlyn nicknames him, has been part of the Journeys since the beginning.  Although he was not identified for quite some time.  Now that he is taking a larger part in the story, I decided to write a scene from his point of view.  You’ll get to know Luce better in the prologue of Journey 9, Doors of Attunement.

Maybe it’s because I’ve long dreamed of this epic novel becoming an anime series, but this song and video fit the mood of my Lucetius character. Well… he has a lot of moods, and they can change erratically, but it still feels appropriate.

The Blurb

Emlyn, Osabide, and Fotia (in Zasha’s body) traveled to a third world, which is so little known that it is only called the Other Realm.  They hope to restore Zasha, but will Fotia willingly relinquish her new life in a young body?  In that realm the trio meets unpredictable, but vastly powerful beings known as the Listeners. One of them is a new enemy. Another might be friend or foe. Either way, he is dangerous.

Her family betrayed Emlyn by not shielding her from the Brethren of Un’Naf.  Now she faces issues of trust.  She is not alone in her distrust, as several characters must confront similar concerns.

Arawn has grown stronger.  An army of the dead gathers near the Lost Library.  Hallgeir faces one of the biggest decisions of his life.

Come and journey with our travelers.  Adventure awaits.

A Dead of Winter Outtake

As massive as this manuscript is, you might find it hard to believe I’ve deleted anything.  I’m sharing a snippet that I removed from the section that became Journey 9.  Even though you won’t have context for it, I hope you enjoy this vignette.

The legendary king, or Cu, Cassiveon and Thyrus tensed, ready to join the fight.  Then Cassiveon drew back.  He also forbade Thyrus from joining the fight.

“It is against the rules of this realm and of time itself.  The evil Listener will be severely punished, at the least, for getting into it.  Regardless of whatever the outcome might be,” Cu Cassiveon told him.

Emlyn watched worriedly as Thyrus’ eyes swirled to colors of red and black.  She was sure that meant he was angry.  The Cu noticed too, and raised perfectly formed eyebrows.  Thyrus’ eyes finally settled to black.  Emlyn knew he was irate, but believed he had gotten control of his temper.

    1. Thanks so much! Plus, I appreciate that feedback, Diana. It gives me a way of giving hints without revealing — and with out *too much* misdirection. This one just didn’t quite fit my mythology. So the scene didn’t turn out quite the same way, but that didn’t impact the storyline. Hugs on the wing!

      Yes — I’m still not certain how many “Journeys” are left, but I think either 3 or 4. I’ve always wanted to rewrite the ending, so I’m not sure how much that will add.

      1. Ah… It is always difficult to write an ending. Authors always tend to change their minds about how their novels should conclude. It is after all how the reader will remember the book!

    1. Hey, Tim. It’s good to see you. I was thinking about your terrific parody songs this morning, when I found myself singing “Here come the weeds again” to the tune of the Eurythmics. LOL.           1. That is an occupational hazard of writing parody lyrics. I had a great big toad blocking my way to the beach the other day. He was demanding I give him the password in order to pass. I said “ribit” and he said “Hop this way!” I had parody lyrics all worked out in my head walking back home, then when I started to write them down all I remembered was “Backwoods covered with leaves in the summer”, “Hop this way!” and “Give me a froggy kiss. Like this!” Fail!

    1. Hi Rae. Yes, it’s in the high fantasy category. I like to call that sort of book quest-type fantasy. It’s not too heavy on the “sword and sorcery” type stuff, but still some magic. I call it more of a story with ghosts than a ghost story. Hugs on the wing.

    1. Thanks, Dan. I didn’t quite make it, but… At least I don’t make a firm promise about publishing on the first Wednesday. Wheew… I’m beat. LOL.
      Maybe this experience will firm-up an editing habit/schedule in my mind that I can transfer to other books on the shelf, after DoW is finished.

      Hahaha! Oh, I was looking ahead earlier today, trying to guess how many journeys are left — and it reminded me of the things I intended to rewrite and polish up at the end. Sigh, there’s more of that “polishing” than I remembered. (Maybe 4 more rather than 3.)

  27. Great news, Teagan! I was already eager to read it, and the description piqued my interest even more. I can imagine how difficult it must have been to get rid of that snippet, and I am very curious. Although the prologue from Luce’s point of view should more than make up for it.     1. Thanks very much, Olga. I removed that scene early on. It was giving Cu Cassiveon powers (or perhaps authority is a better word) that my mythology did not allow for him to have.
      With Luce’s prologue, I hope to balance conclusions to which a few readers might jump because of a scene with him and Emlyn. Although he remains an enigma. I appreciate you reading and commenting. Hugs on the wing!
