The August issue of Dead of Winter is here!

Welcome everyone.  Thanks for visiting my sanctuary.  The “lost library” is one of the mental places where I like to relax.  Although, in Dead of Winter, it may not be a safe harbor.  Our characters definitely need to proceed with caution.  In Journey 7, Revenant Pass they had reached the ruins of the lost Library of the Deae Matres, if barely.  Then several of our favorites just “winked out” of sight.

The Blurb

Throughout the previous volumes, the fantasy aspect of this epic built gradually.  In Journey 8, that fantastical element comes to the fore.

Emlyn and her companions searched for the fabled Lost Library.  The entire world is at risk, so they hope answers will be there.  However, a new complication arises, and the fate of one Deae Matres hangs in the balance.

Meanwhile Arawn, who tore the Veil between the worlds of the living and dead, tries to make an evil alliance with a long dead king who was known for his ruthlessness.

Since these journeys are only novelette-length, it’s hard to share excerpts.  However, I thought I’d share a bit of imagery to whet your appetite.  It doesn’t give any of the story away.

Her hair stirring in a chill draft, Emlyn stepped into the chamber.  The room was vast.  Every wall was covered with bookcases packed full of bound volumes.  Up and up, she looked.  The shelves reached so high that her neck craned all the way back.  Her gaze traversed the incredible number of shelves which reached all the way to the ceiling, at least fifty spans overhead.

The ceiling high above was painted with something that looked like it might be real gold.  It shimmered softly in the early morning light.  Emlyn gazed in openmouthed wonder as the ceiling arched in the center of the broad chamber to an elaborately vaulted stained-glass skylight.

“There’s a break in the glass.  That explains the chill air,” she murmured.

        1. What wonderful feedback, Christine. I love it when a reader tells me they had not liked the genre before! While I like all sorts of fantasy, I took a cue from a couple of mainstream, long-established fantasy authors who gradually amplified the magic/fantasy element with a slow build. I might have proceeded differently if I had written this with the intention of monthly installments. But that wasn’t in my mind when I wrote it ten years ago. Anyhow, with each journey, it becomes more obvious that it’s a fantasy. Hugs.

          1. Teagan, I’m happy I branched out to fantasy and your writing first. I’ll get more into it with your books before reading others. I liked all your main characters & secondary characters! In other fantasy book excerpts, I could’ve care less about the main character or the story theme, and I chose to not buy it. Keep writing! I’m on your list of loyal readers. Hugs back. 📚🎶 Christine

    1. Hi Ms. Frances. No. I need to delete that person’s comment because I knew it would confuse people.
      When an author tells Amazon that a book is part of a series, then Amazon helps readers know the number-order of any book in the series. However, they can’t include books of a series that have yet to be published.

  22. Sounds so fascinating. The excerpt made me think about the Great Library of Alexandria. Epicentre of knowledge and one time and lost in the other. Looks like this will be an interesting novellete!

    1. Thanks very much, Arnav. My mind played with all sorts of research into ancient mythology and the histories of some ancient libraries got into the act too as inspiration for the Library of the Deae Matres. Each novelette builds on the previous one and they usually end with a cliffhanger. Thanks for taking time to read and comment. I appreciate your encouragement. Hugs on the wing!
