Dead of Winter: Journey 2, Penllyn

January 2021 actually began one good thing — monthly, serialized novelettes of an epic fantasy, “Dead of Winter.”  Journey 1, Forlorn Peak was released a month ago.

I actually wrote Dead of Winter ten years ago, as a huge epic fantasy novel.  Late last year when I decided to edit it into a serial/series of novelettes, I did some posts explaining what held me back for a decade.

Some readers missed those posts, and asked about my use of “the Game of Thrones tagline.”  …I had been writing Dead of Winter for two years — all the while weaving the prophetic warning Winter is coming! throughout my 800+ page book.  If you want to know my reaction when suddenly a promo aired for Game of Thrones that used that integral element of my story as a tagline, then please read this post.  Yes, screaming was involved.

Now it’s February, and Journey 2 is here.  This second volume is considerably longer than that first, introductory episode.  However, it is still novelette-length.

I call the installments “journeys,” because the characters travel across the complex world I built, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people. These journeys will publish approximately monthly.  Length will range from 30 to 60 pages, or so.  Forgive me if you’ve already heard that part.

Here’s a little something about Journey 2, Penllyn

Journey 2, Penllyn picks up where the first installment, “Dead of Winter: Journey 1, Forlorn Peak” stopped.  The supernatural warning, “Winter is coming!” continues to haunt Emlyn.  Her father has heard her utter those words, and he is displeased to say the least.  In fact, her family situation in general is becoming more perilous.

As if visitations from ghosts weren’t enough, another entity has started coming to her.  She isn’t sure whether he is a spirit or something else, but he gives her the same prophetic warning.

Now Emlyn’s father has begun to behave strangely.

Join Emlyn on this strange journey to the neighboring village of Penllyn.  Try not to look over your shoulder…

      1. Oh, Teagan. Don’t worry. I always have time for helping out. I just didn’t have time to write posts for 6 weeks, but I had a couple of blog tours, and a couple of quick posts. I didn’t visit other blogs much because I needed to take care of some tidious business.

    1. Emlyn’s ability is uniquely her own. She’s so young that you could say she’s always had it… if that’s what you mean. The world is purely fantasy, though it *resembles* some pre-industrial periods and areas in the real world — but the two are not connected.

    1. Thanks very much, Michael. Haha! When I first had the idea to make it a serial (or series) I had not thought about all the covers I would need. Keeping a somewhat similar appearance to all of them will be a challenge. Happily, I love making the images. Stay safe and well. Hugs on the wing!

            1. I’ve had such fun with it — for any purpose I could come up with. Although that’s when I was working a “good” job. I’ve always gotten the cheapest version. It has limits, but was always enough for my purposes. Their support staff was great when I had problems adding my own recording/narration to the prologue for Journey 1. They did much more than I expected.

    It’s kind of crazy, but I believe the ultimate way to support you is to buy your books.
    I have downloaded the free Kobo reading Ap for desktops. I have created an account. I tried to buy a book… yours. They have already p’d me off. It could be me. I will try again in a few days. I’m still turtling through 2 books, so there is no rush. Somehow Kobo has become part of Rakuten….. which I have nicknamed Ratuten.
    Sigh! We think we are buying a book or a coat or a lamp, but we are selling our intimates.

    1. Thanks very much, Deborah. It’s good to know I’ve kept this monthly editing goal so far. Although I saw that the next one poses some editorial challenges. Converting a novel into a serial is, unfortunately not a simple matter of cut and paste. At least I’ve been able to let that thought sit on my back-burner for a couple of weeks (since I spotted the issue early). Happy hump day. Great big hug.

    1. 😀 ^^’ Thank you kindly, Noelle. This is being an interesting editing challenge. Making something into a serial is a unique process. In this case, since I haven’t looked at the story for ten years, it’s like editing the work of another person. Yes, it’s interesting in many ways. Hugs on the wing!
