When I was a little girl, there were a few times when a group of kids would gather in the garage part of my parent’s modest home, because they liked the games I made up. One boy had the brilliant idea that we should take turns telling ghost stories. So, we turned out the light and got a flashlight to shine up onto the face of the storyteller. 

This boy kicked it off with a story about a casket that roamed around. Everyone would squeal when he announced how many miles away the casket was. That was the extent of the story. When it got there, we were supposed to be terrified.  (Of course my parents were quick to put a stop to those shenanigans, but it was great while it lasted.)

I think the adult version of that little boy would love the latest novel from Roberta Eaton Cheadle (known to many of us as Robbie).

No, that fabulous cover is not one of mine, but I absolutely love it. 

Here’s a snippet that would have had my childhood playmates enthralled.

Pieter stops talking and gazes into space. Memories assail his mind in a kaleidoscope of sounds, smells and visions.

“At about midday, we saw a large cloud of dust coming our way. Having no idea how many horsemen there were, ten other Burghers, Willem and I quickly set up an ambush. As they drew closer, we could make out a mass of at least seven thousand horses and men. It was a hopeless situation and we prepared to withdraw, but the Khakis saw us and started shelling our position. My horse took fright at an exploding shell and bolted. I fell and broke two ribs, but luckily my horse is well trained, and he came back to me. Oom Willem hoisted me back onto my horse, and we were able to escape.”

Marta’s pale face and the tension around her mouth and eyes suddenly register with Pieter.

Is she upset because of my injury or because the Burghers ran away?

“It was cowardly of you men to flee, you should have stayed and fought,” said Marta, her lip curled with contempt.

How does she think I could have carried on fighting with broken ribs? She’s being ridiculous; if we’d carried on fighting, we would’ve all been killed. A handful of men couldn’t hold back such a significant force.

Smiling wryly, he took a sip of water. “Maybe you are right, Marta, but I was in too much pain to influence that decision.”

The Blurb

After Tom and Michelle Cleveland move into their recently built, modern townhouse, their housewarming party is disrupted when a drunken game with an Ouija board goes wrong and summons a sinister poltergeist, Estelle, who died in 1904.

Estelle makes her presence known in a series of terrifying events, culminating in her attacking Tom in his sleep with a knife. But, Estelle isn’t alone. Who are the shadows lurking in the background – one in an old-fashioned slouch hat and the other, a soldier, carrying a rifle?

She must unravel the stories of the three phantoms’ lives, and the circumstances surrounding their untimely deaths during the Second Anglo Boer War, in order to understand how they are tied together and why they are trapped in the world of ghosts between life and death. As the reasons behind Estelle’s malevolent behaviour towards Tom unfold, Michelle’s marriage comes under severe pressure and both their lives are threatened.

      1. Your welcome, Robbie. The UK variants spread to most of the states. The Brazil and SA variants are found in several. We’re very cautious about going outside of our home. I heard more cases and deaths among friends’ families.

        How is your family doing. Does it affect your immediate area?

It is gripping, brilliantly written and the story sounds thrillingly frightening and captivating. A gorgeous sumptuous cover, I agree!     2. Haha, Jim, I had a story about a man with a leg made of gold who died and his caregiver stole the leg. He came back from the dead and climbed up the steps saying “give me back my golden leg.” I used to scare my youngers sisters senseless with that one.

    1. Hi Pete, you are correct, South African history generally is not well known and there aren’t many books about it out there. I have always loved history and enjoyed studying our local history at school. I am sharing it now so that other people can understand our history and learn from it.

  22. This sounds awesome, right up my reading alley….historical with twists of the supernatural. I’ll be picking it up on Kindle when it’s available. I just finished an anthology in which Robbie had three stories. She’s really making a splash with her writing.
    BTW, I love that cover!

    1. Ha! I have never used one in a group (and more than one person seems to be a requirement). I bought one when I made the Ouiji part of Valentino’s train in “Hullaba Lulu.” But I relocated shortly after that. Now I can’t find it. Maybe it got aboard the dieselpunk train!
      Anyhow it’s exciting to see this new one from Robbie. I know she’s been preparing it for quite a while. Have a wonderful new week, Dan. Hugs on the wing!
