Happy New Year, one and all! 

For weeks I’ve been giving hints and making little shout-outs for a new serial/series, but uncertain of when I would be ready.  The day is finally here.  Presenting Dead of Winter: Journey 1, Forlorn Peak!

Dead of Winter will be a serial/series available through Amazon. (Maybe other sites as well, for the anti-Amazon among us.  If those sites cooperate, that is.  I have little patience for their shenanigans). 

I call the installments Journeys, because the characters travel across the complex world I built, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people. These journeys will publish approximately monthly.  Length will range from 30 to 60 pages, or so.

Here’s the Blurb

Dead of Winter takes place in a fantasy world that resembles some countries in the past of our own world.  In this monthly series we travel through many lands, each with a distinct culture.  The series begins in the Flowing Lands at Forlorn Peak (Journey 1).

The Brethren are fanatics who gradually took over the Flowing Lands.  They say all beliefs but theirs are heresy.  Women are little more than property.  Emlyn is only twelve, but to the Brethren she is an abomination.  Why?  She can see ghosts and other entities.  That’s a secret she can admit only to her teacher, Osabide.

The stronger Emlyn’s ability gets, the harder it is for her to hide it.  Now she has also gotten a supernatural warning that she knows is not about the weather, “Winter is coming!”

As the veil separating the world of the living from the realm of the dead deteriorates, the danger accelerates.  Journey with Emlyn as she explores her world and its many cultures in Dead of Winter.

Some of you have seen this video with me narrating the prologue, and thank you so much for listening.  It took half a bottle of throat spray, but I did it.  The recording lasts fewer than three minutes and there are lovely images to entertain you. If you haven’t already, then I hope you will stop to listen.

Saddle Up & Name Your Horse!

High fantasy novels tend to be filled with names — names for characters, countries, traditions, even the horses have names!  Dead of Winter is no exception.  What would you name your fantasy horse?  Leave a comment and introduce your brilliant steed. 

My fantasy horse is a Clydesdale named Raspberry.  No, she is not in the story.  The name isn’t for fanciful coloring, it’s because she has a bad attitude, and tends to blow a raspberry when she doesn’t want to do something.  Although Raspberry weighs-in at 1,900 pounds, so she’s able to carry me.  Raspberry has an inner-compass.  We won’t stay lost for long, because she can always manage to find the nearest tavern.  The horse has a distinct fondness for ale.  She has a secret crush on a horse named, of course, Clyde.

Although the horses don’t come into the series until after Journey 1, Forlorn Peak, I invite you to saddle up and visit the wonderful author/bloggers who generously volunteered to help with the launch.  You’ll see posts from them at various times during this month.  Giddy-up — let’s go!  New journeys await.

    1. Dear Valentina, no worries. You need to be taking care of you. The big launch was with the first “Journey” (that’s what I’m calling the monthly installments — Journeys). Maybe you can help keep the interest going by sharing the second Journey. Or the third. This will go on for about a year. But only if you’re ready to get back into the swing of things.

        I was so lazy during my break, but had a wonderful small outdoor party for my husband’s birthday on Sunday. People lingered for four and a half hours as if the thirsty travelers found fresh water after a long journey.

    1. Teri, I haven’t heard the name Stormbreaker before. I love it. I didn’t know anything about horses. Then I came to a future “journey” of Dead of Winter where I needed Emlyn to learn about them. Of course I did volumes of research, but I was glad that a coworker had horses (and a daughter who rode in competitions), so I could get some confirmation on details.   18. Yay! Congratulations on your release! I’m so interested in following your journey (pun intended) with these serials, as I think it’s such a unique way to tell a story. You have to keep us all updated how you find the experience!
    As for fantasy horse, well, I’d have to go with one of the horses I named in my weird western – Crowbait, Uzeblikblik, Onyx, or Lumiere.

    1. Hi Jessica. The monthly installments seem to fit well with this particular story. And the prospect of editing segments rather than 800+ pages is not nearly as daunting! LOL. Anyway, I thought I’d try it and see how it goes.

  20. My fantasy horse is a HUGE (8 foot high) Welsh Cob, amber in colour and sporting a lush lion’s mane and furry feet. His name is Sombra, the Shadow.
    Like the legendary sword, Excalibur, Sombra can only be paired with the right hero or heroine. Nobody else can form a bond with him. Who will that hero or heroine be? All we know is the name: Elo. Until Elo was united with this magnificent beast, thy had no self confidence. Once mounted, they know a new strength.
    Sombra has one more surprising, powerful attribute. His hooves are cloven into two, retractable talons. His talons are of a material that is harder than diamond, so can cut through absolutely anything. Do NOT get on the wrong side of this horse or his rider!

    My horse would be a Blue Morgan male named Tycho. He’d be fast, strong, sure-footed, gentle, loyal, and he too would be able to find his way home, and keep me on his back even if I was dozing on long journeys. 😀

    I would have to have a gray quarter horse named Wolfe. He would be a bit surley, but a fantastic jumper. A protective side with a natural instinct of which humans are good or bad.

  31. I will be purchasing today, Teagan. It all sounds too wonderful to resist! My horse is named Mystique said to be one of the original horses from which the horses of Assateague Island descend. Bold and beautiful, she belongs to the place where the ocean and sea clash, never to perish.

  32. What better way to start off 2021!! I sure can’t think of a better way that a new series. I loved the prologue!! Now I’m off to Amazon to load up my Kindle. Yep I sold my soul the the devil in 2017 when the lure of Prime was too much to bear.

    My fantasy horse is named Zeus. Why not name the horse after the god who stabled him? Such fun!

  35. Another wonderful project from Teagan, the masterful author! I’d join you in your anti-Amazon sentiments except that they have provided excellent customer service since I bough my Kindle in September and have had two major issues with it. We’ll see how it goes moving forward.

    My fantasy horse is a unicorn (I collected unicorn figurines and trinkets for many years) and I will name him Plenty.

        1. Excellent. With my “issues” I already relied on Amazon deliveries (even before the COVID Apocalypse). Even with all my orders, I’ve only had one negative customer service experience with them. (A broken set of glasses the rep in India wouldn’t accept that I didn’t want to ship back.) Otherwise, wherever the rep has been, they’ve been great.

  36. Best wishes on the serial, Teagan. My fantasy horse’s name is Calvin. He is named after the wonderful show jumping horse that carried my daughter safely through hair raising 1.5-meter competitions. He is smart, quick, and can leap tall buildings with a single bound. Also, he doesn’t like arrogant boys. Your narration is sublime, and I loved the prologue.

  38. I like the prologue and the comments to your new book. My fantasy horse would be named Megan. She can fly like Pegasus and talk like Mr. Ed. She is former plow horse and has more horse sense than I would ever be accused of having. Although her head has been in the clouds, her four hooves are firmly planted in the ground when it comes to knowing what’s what. It’s not where we start but where are our abilities take us that define who we are.

  43. Great videos, yes very good for drawing us into this incredible but dangerous world. I used to call my fantasy race horse, Glendalough. I don’t approve of racing now but used to love watching the beautiful forms of horses at speed. Don’t put me on on though!

        1. Giving her a horse also served to let me develop a relationship between her and another character who comes into the story later. (Not a love interest — she’s barely 12.) One change in the original manuscript that I might be tempted to change is to further develop that character’s personal story. This monthly novelette format might let me do that, while it didn’t really work with the single book.
          But that’s farther away than even Journey 2.
