Welcome to my sanctuary, and happy hump day.  It’s time for a vote — but a fun one.  We’re not voting on the book cover though. I’m getting ahead of myself. First things first.  Drumroll…

It’s not a book, not exactly.  It’s not a blog serial.  However, it is coming this winter.  Actually, it was my first finished novel. I wrote it back in 2010. It’s an epic “high fantasy.” 

Other than daydreaming about it becoming an anime series, I’ve been conflicted about just how I wanted to handle it.  Then on Sunday I decided.  It will be a monthly serial available on Amazon, and probably Kobo too.

This serial will take a different approach than a blog serial.  It’s something for when you want to allow yourself a little more reading time than a blog, but not as much as you might for a book. 

I’d like your feedback on what you think is a good episode size for this kind of read.  For example Fiona Finch & the Pink Valentine has been described as an 1 1/2 hour read. It contains 10,403 words and has about 55 pages.

Now, would you please vote?  I haven’t made a poll with the latest WordPress atrocity, so let’s hope it actually works.  If it doesn’t play nice, then please let me know your choice in a comment.

I’ll tell you more about Dead of Winter as we go along.  Next week, the main reason why I waited ten years!

    1. At first I hated reading on anything except a regular paper book, Lavinia. But as I get older and my eyes get worse, I’m starting to like my Kindle more and more. I can adjust text size, and even more helpful, the light — how bright the page is. There are a number of adjustments I can make. I’m not trying to convert you, I’m just sharing my own surprise that I have come to like it.
      I appreciate your feedback on this. If the monthly episodes are big enough, I will probably go ahead and make paper backs, but there is a minimum page requirement. Either way, at the end, I will definitely make either a bundle or an omnibus. Hugs on the wing!

  3. Teagan, Wow, on this cover. Moody, beautiful and a story full of possibility. My take. This is a brand new category of reading for me. It sounds like a great idea. I will give number of pages some thought. “High fantasy” already has me intrigued.🙂

Thanks so much for the feedback, Erica — and for your lovely comment on the cover. “High fantasy” is a term that gets applied to stories that usually have a lot of magic, no technology, and a journey. Tolkien is the best known writer I could use as an example of high fantasy, although I’d never compare myself to him. D. Wallace Peach also writes marvelous high fantasy. My personal word for this kind of story is “quest-type,” because there’s always a quest. I really appreciate you visiting. Hugs on the wing!

    1. Thanks so much, Michael. I appreciate your feedback. It feels good to have finally decided what to do with this story.
      Crystal was acting a little “off” this morning. But happily she just now “killed” her string toy and dragged it to her “lair.” Then she ate her breakfast. So all is well here. A wonderful day to you too, my friend. Hugs on the wing!

  6. Oooo that cover is divine!! I’m going to be a total noob now and ask, ‘what’s an ebook serial?’ 🙂
    I guess it’s a short short story released every month? I’ve never heard of releasing a book that way! So, I didn’t take your poll because I obviously have no clue, but I’ll be following closely. A very interesting concept, Teagan!

    1. Thanks so much about the cover, Jess. LOL, I admit that I’m in love with my own cover. Basically yes. They’ve been around for a long time, but I’ve never considered it before now. As for the publishing, I’ll probably handle it like a series of novels, to avoid any rules and red tape related to it being called a serial.     This is a great idea.
    I worked on this TV mini-series that is based on a book (Best Laid Plans) by a Canadian author, Terry Fallis.

    He couldn’t sell it for the life of him.
    SO, he put it on ITunes. He read it as a serial, once a week. It was only a buck/per. It caught on! People began buying it every week, then eventually. the book. It became a best seller, and he won some awards.
    You are onto something, Ms. C. Pyjamas!

  8. What an innovative idea! I voted for a shorter length simply because I seldom have time to sit down and read for long periods of time. Also, I´m a slow reader. I LOVE the cover. Good luck with this project.

    1. Hi Darlene. Thanks so much about the cover! I’m not a quick reader either. The benefit that I see in this method is the easier place-saving capability of an e-reader as compared to a blog. But since I intend to only publish an episode monthly, they can be larger. Anyhow it’s a new adventure in my “grand experiment with indie.” Hugs on the wing!

  10. A cool idea, Teagan. And the cover is amazing. I voted for the longer episode lengths, but I think the answer depends on cost per episode and how many episodes you’ll have to the serial. Add all that up and consider whether a reader will balk at the total price or not. Even at $.99 per episode, 40 episodes might be too much for some readers, while 20 episodes might be more palatable. Just my thought here. I love the idea.

  11. What an interesting concept, Teagan. First of all, let me say I LOVE the cover! It screams of fantasy mixed with reality and is most attractive. I voted and will be following along on this new journey. Kudos to you for always stepping outside the box to try new things!

  14. I love the cover (and I voted).

    I’m not getting any notifications from WordPress, so I’m late today. I usually start my Wednesday at your place. I figured you had skipped this week. Then I noticed I don’t have any notifications. So, if you see me drop off and reconnect later, don’t worry.

    I like the idea of a monthly serial. I would read any amount, but I’m sure you;ll figure out what will work best.

    1. Dan, I wouldn’t have even thought about it. WordPress repeatedly drops me from the blogs I follow, and it’s been going on for years. I stopped trying to get notifications years ago. I’ve repeated the work too many times. Yes, it adds to the problems with keeping up with everyone, but… I guess I chose my battle.

      2. Great cover, Teagan! I’m attracted to the dreamy kind of images. I voted.

        WP dropped me from the blogs I followed on a regular basis. I complained many times but they were of no help. I ended up made my own list of blogs I followed and randomly checked to see if I got unfollowed when the posts didn’t come to the Reader. One blog never come to my Reader even though I re-follow every week!!

        1. Thanks so much about the cover, Miriam. Yep! I know exactly what you mean. It goes beyond just the email notifications too. I get dropped from the general “follow” that lets folks show up in my Reader. I just randomly check on people. With my unreliable Internet, it makes it impossible to keep up even under the best WordPress-circumstance. Thank you for taking time to comment. I hope you had a great vacation with family.           1. It’s very disappointing that the blogs I’ve followed for years got dropped from my Reader. Sorry about your internet. I think bloggers are very understanding. We just try our best to catch up when we can.

            We had a wonderful time with the grand kids. Autumn (age 3) woke us up every morning before she went to her parents. I’m glad she thought we were special!

  17. Serials do have a following, Teagan, and I think it’s a great idea. Give it time to gain a following though. Best advice for page count per episode is to look up serials in your genre on Amazon. This gives you ideas for pricing too. Purchase a couple and/or use the Look Inside the Book feature to check them out. I’m sure each episode ends with a cliffhanger. No problem for you. 😊 I don’t know if all retailers allow serials. I love your cover. ❤

    1. It’s great to see you, Judi. I haven’t seen the Maleficent movies — I should look for them. The old painting I used as a background reminds me of the initial setting of the story. It’s what I call a “quest type” fantasy (my made up term), so it moves all around the big world I created. I’m intrigued. I’m with you — I don’t like unhappy endings.     1. Hi Chris. That’s a very good question. It will not be a subscription. Based on the research I’ve done, there seem to be “official Amazon serials” that require approval. I agreed with the idea of making each episode published individually — and they could be bought individually. (Many writers are publishing one-off short stories.) I would publish one segment a month. At the end, I would either make a bundle or an omnibus. Thanks very much for asking. Hugs on the wing.

  26. Love the cover, Teagan. Like Christoph, I’m not a big reader of serials (also too impatient and these days I easily lose track of things), but I’ve always enjoyed yours, so I’ve put my vote in. And I’m very intrigued. Good luck!

    1. Ha! I can understand that, Christoph. I would bundle it all at the end. In a way, it’s an experiment. I had this massive novel, just sitting there. This would also commit me to editing it, but in manageable chunks. I appreciate your feedback. Hugs on the wing!
