Wednesday Writing — Boots

I wasn’t going to do a post for today, particularly when my yesterday went right down Snoopy’s tubes. (Click over and ask Dan Antion at No Facilities what that means.) However, today I’m pulling myself up by my boot-straps and trying to give that bad day the boot.  Do you detect a theme?

My novel in progress started with the mental image of the go-go boots I loved as a very little girl. It has been a challenge to write — partly because I let some very personal stuff get into the story.  Some people have suggested that maybe by adding that stuff I’ve been messin’ where I shouldn’t be a messin,’ (as the song would say).  So, I’m trying to walk all over that.

  2. I looked up the Goodyear Tire commercial. Nancy Sinatra apparently sued Goodyear over the use of it.

    The smoke from the California fires has not affected us up here, yet, but we have musician friends traveling in their motor home, and were parked at a friend’s farm when the evacuation order came. They got out just before Route 80 was closed both directions. We are praying for their safety, their friend’s safety, and for his farm and animals.

    1. I don’t remember the commercial, but that might be why I knew the song so well so young. (There wasn’t a lot of rock and roll on the radio in our house when I was small. Commercials on the other hand… the TV raised me.) I hope you’re having a lovely weekend. Are you troubled by smoke from the CA fires? Hugs on the wing.

  4. Yup, one boot in front of the other. Always liked that song of Miss Sinatra even before I worked a modern dance performance where three people danced to it wearing only cowboy hats, sunglasses, and of course boots. And as mentioned her song Summer Wine is another fine one.

    1. Thanks, Carol — I hope you are having a good Friday too. LOL, it’s always something, isn’t it. Every day the past 2 weeks, I think I’m turning the “bad day” around — and there it goes down Snoopy’s tubes again. Yesterday was pretty good — until I ate the wrong thing for dinner. Sigh… So reaching for those boot straps yet again this morning.

    1. Ah, Robbie, I see that you really get it. Thank you so much for this comment. Only a handful of people know my true story. All of them encourage me to write it, an autobiography. Some of that handful try to shame me into it, by insisting that it might help someone else. That’s where friends go wrong. Someone did that again just yesterday. They can’t grasp that writing it is not like taking a photo album and handing it to the world without looking at the contents.
      If you felt anything other than cleansing by writing it, then you did the right thing in putting your memoir aside. Hugs on the wing.

    1. Hi Christoph, thanks so much for dropping by. This one posted later than my usual time.
      I’ve been working on a “real world” job all week. Nice to get a big confidence boost by finding my stride with that particular non-fiction kind of writing/editing — and nice to get paid too. However, it kept me away from the Delta Pearl. So I don’t have then next chapter written yet. We’ll have to wait an extra week to see what effect the visible music has on Jet Fischer. 😉

      1. My husband has been cooking, but every once in a while we get take-out. But there are restaurants we love that are not open. Trying to keep the pounds off is another hassle. What a terrible year! Trying to keep positive – the boots help!

  13. I’m having one of those days today. I can’t seem to get traction on the stuff I want to work on because all the crap that needs to be handled gets in the way. Thanks for letting me rant. (Although I didn’t ask in advance) Hugs

    1. LOL, any time, John. My day actually got that way too. But it’s still a damn sight better than that Snoopy-tuber of yesterday! Thankfully today, it’s mostly my usual lack of focus. Plus I took a “real world” editing gig for some gov related stuff, so my brain is utterly confused today. Maybe wine time (or bourbon time) should come early today. 🙂 Huge hugs right back.

    I’m kind of where you are, Teagan, struggling and mucking through slow progress. But it is progress, so we should own it, LOL!

    1. Ya know! How ironic that something that just doesn’t “want” to cooperate with me is something I can’t give up. Wishing you luck and easy speed with yours, Mae.   16. Ah, Teagan – an excellent reflection. You reminded me of a quote by Ursula Le Guin – “To see that your life is a story while you’re in the middle of living it may be a help to living it well.”

    1. That’s a great description of her version of the song, Priscilla! Yes, it’s a sassy, fun, in-your-face song. Ugh… I really do feel like I’m dragging myself through muck with how slow I’m going though. Hugs on the wing!

  20. Hi Teagan. So, are you going to keep those personal things in your story? I ask because I’m all about expressing internal issues to get through them. My first novel has some of my personal relationship with my mother-in-law in it. I think it made for good tension in the story and also helped me along the way.

    Okay, now I’m ready to go walking. Put that bad yesterday behind you and have a Happy Hump Day.

    1. Hi Lori, it’s good to see you. I appreciate this comment and what you shared in it.
      At first, I thought that if I didn’t feel the personal things were good for the story (or were something that would cause people to dislike it) that I could edit them out when I was finished. However, after a couple of months, I could see that those things were woven too tightly into the overall story. I tried to down-play them without removing — but that just didn’t work either. So I put most of it back in — and then a little more.
      One “item” will create tension, because it can be used against the heroine, like a threat. The rest is used to develop her character, and hopefully make the character sympathetic.
      Many reviewers and teachers say that the narrator/protagonist character is often the least interesting character in the story — and that is acceptable, almost unavoidable, since they’re telling it. So I hope including “my stuff” will at least make the heroine interesting.

    1. Haha! Your “Snoopy’s tubes” concept seems to be a hit here, Dan. Yeah, I really had a seriously bad day yesterday. But sometimes you have to hit bottom before you can start back up. So trying to get my feet into those boots. Hugs on the wing!

  22. Walk it all off, Teagan. It’s rather amazing how writing can stir things up, but you’re the boss of the story. (And I had a pair of go-go boots as a little girl. I stuffed my feet into them for years, well beyond painful toes. :-D)

    1. Good idea or bad, it has made for hugely difficult writing/editing decisions, about what to keep and how much. This story is such an odd mishmash, Diana. I guess I just need to accept it for what it is, and keep going — because I seem unable to give it up. So c’mon boots — let’s start walkin’! Hugs on the wing!

  24. You know my opinion already, and I love the song, so, although it’s too hot for boots here, do keep walking! (And mess with whatever you feel like!). Love Dan’s anecdote and I’ll adopt that quote as well!
