Hidebound Hump Day ― Punk Response to Prompt

Wednesday, November 6, 2019

It’s Hidebound Hump Day, my chuckaboos! I’m already struggling with the pace of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).  However, I’m happy with what I’ve done so far on my new, quirky story.  Not to be coy, but I’m keeping this one “close to the vest,” as The Dealer might say.

Regardless of all that, I couldn’t resist pausing long enough to make some kind of response to a prompt from Diana Wallace Peach.

Diana is also doing NaNoWriMo, but she took time to issue a delightful writing challenge.

Write from the point of view of a creature that doesn’t exist in the “real” world.  Don’t tell us what the creature is. Let us “experience” it through its thoughts and actions.

Although I really, really wanted to work this into my November novel… it wasn’t coming together.  Then I remembered something I wrote a while back. It fit the prompt!

Some of you will remember that a fictionalized Nicola Tesla was a character in my Hullaba Lulu serial, illustrated by Rob Goldstein.  I keep toying with the idea of a “Tesla Punk” story.  Yes, that’s a thing.  Think steampunk (Victorian), but with Nicola Tesla-related elements.  Although that story might never get off the ground, here’s a tidbit I wrote to open the story — and fits Diana’s challenge.  So here goes…

Untitled Tesla Punk

Darkness, downy soft, dreamily silent, it extended beyond anything I could touch.

“Nicola,” I cooed into the void.  “Ni-co-la, Ni-co-la,” I repeated the rhythm.

I knew he would hear me.  I had no doubt that he would recognize the cadence of my voice.  No matter how we were separated by space and time, I was sure he would find me.

In this darkness I was reborn.  I drifted.  I summoned him.  I waited.  I cooed.

The end

I hope you enjoyed this tidbit from my Tesla-verse.  If you know some trivia about the eccentric inventor, then you might guess what “I” am.

This post is also a special wish for my friend Rob Goldstein — Happy birthday Rob! Many, many deliriously happy returns! I hope everyone will click over to his virtual birthday party and wish him well.

Happy Birthday, Rob!

Thanks for visiting, my chuckaboos.  Happy November!

  1. Howdy, I think your blog may be having browser compatibility problems. Whenever I take a look at your website in Safari, it looks fine however, when opening in I.E., it has some overlapping issues. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Apart from that, wonderful blog!

    1. Yes, we can make it. I’ll be “the little engine who could” — I’m already sore from pulling weeds this morning. But we had a heavy rain last night, loosening the weeds to make the job easier. I think I might have lunch before I move on to my National Novel Writing Month story.

I’m delighted you liked this little story, Michael. I appreciate your feedback. Hugs to you and yours.

    1. Thank you so very much, Annika. I meant it to be (part of) a very odd story… This character wouldn’t be a main character, but would be the narrator. I’m happily surprised by the positive response to it here. It might make a fun blog serial at that. Hmmm. I appreciate you taking time to comment. Hugs on the wing!

    1. Hi Tim, it’s good to see you. I really tried to get a collaboration going with this story earlier this year. When that didn’t happen I went a completely different direction. I had not worked closely with Dan Antion, but I pitched the “Brother Love” idea to Dan, and that was my next serial.
I’m happily surprised by the positive response to this odd snippet. Mabe it will be my next blog serial just on my own. It’s a very weird story though… Hmmm. I appreciate you taking time to visit. Hugs on the wing!

  2. What an excellent response to Diana’s challenge, Teagan! I adore it! I am plugging away on the NaNo challenge. My project is still missing from their site and I’ve sent an email about it. In the meantime, I’m moving forward whether or not my work is recognized by NaNo or not! 🙂

    1. I’m sorry you’re still having problems with their site, Jan. Their help desk never did get back to me over a week ago. But they have no problem constantly hounding for donations… Well, there was never any requirement to update your word count or any of the “project” stuff before the end of the month. So keep moving forward.
I’m glad you enjoyed this tidbit. Hugs on the wing!

    1. Oh, that’s a great guess, if you didn’t know any Tesla trivia. Tesla loved that pigeon, so I figure she loved him in return. 😀 Thanks for the good wishes. I haven’t gotten to write today, so I’m way behind. Enjoy the party at Rob’s. There are brownies! Hugs on the wing.

  3. Oh my, Teagan. I got my coffee, my bagel, my recliner, ready to sit back and read a nice long Teagan story. Then it was over in a snap. Lol. And I wanted more (even though my instructions said to keep it short). Great tease and hook. I love the mood, and of course, hope that someday this evolves. Now back to NaNo, my friend. Have fun.

    1. Thank you, Diana. And thanks for the challenge.
Ha! Yeah, that was barely a sniff. When I did that, I was trying to get a collaboration started, but didn’t receive any interest. One day I will pursue it on my own. Hugs on the wing!

  4. I’m intrigued by this (I must learn more about Tesla) and by your comments about NaNoWriMo. Good luck and looking forward to hearing more. And Happy Birthday to Rob!
