Hidebound yet Jazzy – Blog Party!

Welcome to Hidebound Hump Day, my chuckaboos!  Sheiks and Shebas — hi there, you’re at Jazz Age Wednesdays!

Update: I apologize that I’ve been a poor excuse for a hostess at my own party. My Internet has been down more than it’s been up the past three days.  I find myself repeatedly redoing comments and emails, and losing Facebook posts and comments, every time the Internet drops again.

I’m of two minds — and eras!  Or couldn’t you tell?  Where to go with my midweek post?

I’m still, every so slowly settling into my new home, 2,000 miles away from the place where I lived for ten years.  Meanwhile, I’m also having a great time using  Dan Antion’s photographs and writing my new serial, The Delta Pearl.  It’s a steampunk fantasy, and so has the look of the Victorian Era.  (If you missed Chapter 1 — Dance click the link.)

Yet I also want to finalize the third novel in my Roaring Twenties series, A Ghost in the Kitchen, a Three Ingredients story.

I couldn’t decide, so I’m having a costume party!

Valentina loves the 1920s and sent me a link to her post about a related fashion accessory — the reticule.  It’s a little handbag also known as a ridicule or an indispensable.  I discovered that it was popular during both eras, and I found a bridge!

Let’s bridge the Victorian Era and the Jazz Age with a costume party. Leave a comment describing your costume for the “Steam Era,” or for your Victorian finery, or for the 1920s.  If you want, mention a food from the era you’ve brought, or the cocktail you are drinking.

Come on, play along!  Jinx from Brother Love – a Crossroads is here in steampunk gear.

Since I’m still of two minds, my costume will be a mash-up.  I’m wearing a low-waisted “short” dress with a cloche hat that has steampunk goggles attached, and I carry a tassel trimmed reticule.  Everything is in mauve, the color popular with Victorians.

Oh, I hear some of my chuckaboos driving up now.  I wonder who is in that Rolls-Royce Phantom — and who’s that in the barouche carriage with a fold-up hood?

Hmmm…  Both eras will be represented, so I’d best prepare a tray of each.  For the 1920s maybe some little lemon cakes, oh and gin rickeys.  The Victorians liked mint juleps and maybe some custards. Oh and of course — absinthe for steampunk!

Come on in, the shindig is starting!

Join the party by leaving a comment — and include a link to one of your posts.

  1. The party continues, despite my Internet problems. Keep eating, dancing, and enjoying the refreshments. I see someone put steampunk goggles and a pink feather boa on one of the automaton waiters. But he seems to like it, so that’s okay.
It’s morning where I am, so the buffet has fresh tomato aspic, eggs Benedict, and all manner of goodies enjoyed in the Victorian Era and the 1920s. Have a bite to eat and then get back to the dance floor!

  2. Teagan, I’ve been having all kind of computer woes this week, so I am happy to land at your party! I’m in something Victorian with a cinched waist and pearl buttons running from the wrists to elbows—but I’ll mash it up with a glitzy feather plume hair clip from the jazz age. For a drink? Hmm. I think I’ll order a gin martini with fat olives 🙂

Thanks for the invite and congrats!!

    1. Say it ain’t so, Mae. Not the Internet right on the heels of the refrigerator. I can relate. My Internet is still dropping right and left, so I’m not doing the best job of keeping up with my own party.
You look marvelous in your costume. You’ve ordered my favorite potent potable so I’ll join you. Waiter — please add some extra olives too. Oh, and a splash of olive juice to make mine a dirty martini. Mae, these automatons are the cat’s meow!
I hope you’ll come back with links to your books. Hugs!

      1. I think my Internet woes have gone south for now, Teagan. And just in time for your glitzy party. I’m happy to have you join me with a martini, and I’ll tae the splash of olive juice too. You really know how to throw a bash!!

    1. Many thanks for sharing from your place, Dyanna. My Internet is still dropping right and left, so I’m not doing the best job of keeping up. But everyone can still post comments and otherwise party-on in my absence. Hugs! ❤

Keep on dancing my chuckaboos! The automaton waiters will keep working. Hugs.

    1. Welcome, Robert. I’m happy you could come to this shindig! Thanks for bringing the link. I enjoyed visiting your blog. I see someone motioning you over to the Lindy Hop. Your turn to cut a rug. Hugs.

  4. This is so exciting! I can’t help but think of the movie, “Thoroughly Modern Milly” with Julie Andrews breaking from the Victorian era. I would cut my hair in a bob, and wear a loose, short dress (above the ankle). I would definitely be dancing, doing the Charleston.

    1. Jennie, you can really cut a rug! The crowd, even the automatons stop to admire. You look great in a bob. When you’re ready for a break the waiter has lemonade and some Lynchburg lemonade if you want something stronger. There’s also a refreshing tomato aspic on the buffet table. I’m glad you could make it to the party. You’re the cat’s meow!

    1. Rob, my chuckaboo, I appreciate you coming despite feeling green around the gills. And you brought one of the wonderful videos you made for Hullaba Lulu! .💙💚💛💜💓 I hope everyone will check it out. You’re the cat’s pajamas!

  5. Sorry, I’m late, Teagan but my hot air balloon decided to take a trip on its own. I’m wearing a formal cutaway with striped pants and spats. I put on a glove grey vest to match my …well…grey gloves. My silk top hat will double as a beverage container if you are running short of glassware. Gin for me. Nothing fancy just a little ice and a lot of gin. I tethered my balloon in your backyard and if you want to take it for a ride please feel free. Watch those igniters though. They could wilt that beautiful head of hair. Better I should go with you. There’s champers in the basket to toast the sunset. Link? OMG How about today’s story. http://johnwhowell.com/2019/08/07/wednesday-story-day-aka-hump-day-225/

    1. Tee-hee! Kudos, my chuckaboo! You arrived in high style. No pun intended. And well worth the (very little) wait.
I got close to those igniters about 14 years ago at the International Balloon Festival in Albuquerque. I would not trifle with those things! o_O
I look forward to your Story Day each week, John. Thanks for bringing the link.

Your costume is the bee’s knees. I only just noticed the spigot on your top hat. How considerate of you to bring your own gin! The automaton bartender will refill it for you at the end of the party. He’ll also have doggie bag treats to send to Lucy and Twiggy.

Look out — here come Teri and DL to pull you out onto the dance floor. Hugs!

  6. Great party, Teagan! I was going to wear my velvet green victorian dress but its too hot. I went for a cooler verison in the other style in more modern times. Flowy and light but smart looking too. I have on my best 20s hat all ready to mingle.

  7. Thanks for inviting me to your party, Teagan! I’m wearing a low cut burgundy sequined dress with silver fringed beats hanging from it, a headband with feathers and a black feathered boa draped around my arms. 🙂 Oh, and a gin tonic will suit me just fine. I tried to insert a picture, but couldn’t figure it out. 🙂

    1. Thanks for coming with a link, Jan. Your costume is the cat’s particulars! The automaton waiter has your gin and tonic right now. I see he’s brought you some swell little squares of lemon cake too. Watch out! That couple doing the Lindy Hop is doing some wild moves. Oh! I see they’ve already pulled you into the dance. Cheers!

    1. Yay! Another Bad Moon Rising! I’m so glad you brought the link. I’ll be over to sign up as soon as I finish programming this automaton to take over hostess duties. 😀
You are the cat’s particulars in those striped steampunk indispensables (pants), Teri. And that clockwork kitten peeping up from your vest pocket is adorable. Here’s the waiter with your glass of red “mecks.” Cheers!

  8. I have no idea what I’d be wearing, but it would definitely be pants and not a skirt. As for what I’d be drinking? Bourbon, neat. (Unless my father-in-law is around to make me a Manhattan.)

Loved this one, Teagan. Interactive posts are always fun.

    1. Staci, my chuckaboo, my automaton bartender can make anything you want. Here comes a waiter with your Manhattan right now. 😉 Your Garçonne look suits you to a T.

I’m so glad you could make it. You’re the cat’s pajamas!

  9. Never been a party girl, but this sounds like fun. I would arrive in a full-length, sequined ‘flapper’ dress, with a slit that would definitely draw attention! And it would be backless. I’d wear a Gatsby Headband and a fetching smile. Lol. I don’t drink, so I’ll pretend to be sipping champagne from a flute, and when no one is eyeing my slit, I’ll discreetly water a potted plant with the champagne!! 😂😂

    1. I’m so glad you could make it, Ginger! That gorgeous gown is the bee’s knees! Applesauce — what an elegant shindig this has become! Lemons were a big deal in the 1920s — and Michael already asked about “Lynchburg whiskey” — so I’ll have the automaton bartender mix you a champagne flute of just lemonade. Cheers!

    1. Geoff, I’m so glad you could make it to this shindig. What a great choice you made in swapping the “indispensables” for a pair of tropical print Bermuda shorts! I see you’ve been cutting a rug on the dance floor. Feel free to drop in again with a link to your books. Hugs!

    1. Dan, my *chuckaboo,* I’m glad you could make it to this shindig. It sure has become such an *afternoonified* party. You look quite dapper in that costume. The automaton butler will take your hat and cane so you can join the Charleston. Or just relax with a *flash of lightning*.

  10. Hi Teagan, a lovely party as always. I will wear Countess Elizabeth Bathory’s outfit from Through the Nethergate “She wore a full, floor-length dress made of a rich and heavy maroon velvet. Puffy sleeves of a fine, white organza material were let into the dress, which matched a gathered panel of the same expensive fabric that ran down the front of the skirt. The dress had a high, lacy collar, which was stiff and most uncomfortable looking.” Here is a link to an extract from my WIP: https://robertawrites235681907.wordpress.com/2019/08/04/short-story-competition-august-the-automated-worm/

  11. Oooooh – a party!! For sure I’d be wearing a floor length flapper-style dress, backless, with a little feathered something in my hair.

A Gin Rickey and lemon cake sounds divine, but I think I’d start with a glass of champagne first … maybe 2 😉

  12. Oh, how exciting! I’m in two minds, but having just finished reading a book set in 1920s Paris, it would have to be a sparkling Charleston style dress. And a feather boa! Thanks for the party, Teagan!
