What’s Next? Again…

Hello again, everyone.  Two posts in one day is unlike me.  However, it’s a reflection of how torn I’ve been, and still am, about which serial to do next.

Using reader-provided random things in serials has been a great way for me to write and finish stories. However, The Guitar Mancer is a notable exception to this. I was almost finished with the novel, and it did not convert well to a serial. The pace for regular novels, at least for mine, is different than the flow of a weekly serial. 

However, I have some unfinished novels that are not close to finished. For my next serial I was choosing between two steampunk (Victorian Era-ish) stories.

A few of you may have figured out (from my previous post) that I had decided to serialize the next adventure for Cornelis Drebbel, The Skull of the Alchemist.

Hence the hint in Go Back — Jack Do It Again. That meant the character Jack (whom some of you have met in posts), and the fact that I’d be going back to the Cornelis universe.  Book 2 also had a mine setting, hence the “shaft” clue.

Yet suddenly I thought maybe I should save that one so that I could release both Cornelis books at the same time, when that second serial finishes… 

I went back to wallow in indecision!  The other story is The Delta Pearl.  It’s also steampunk.  Years ago, when I started the novel, I shared a lot about it here.  It’s set on a magical riverboat (of the title).

Characters are named after gemstones, along with their job titles on the Pearl, like the Dealer, the First Mate, or the Cook.  The Delta Pearl (riverboat) herself is something of a character.  There are also several steampunk, clockwork critters onboard.

Like I said, I’m quite torn about which of the two I want to use.  So, I’m asking for your help. 

Please use this poll, and vote for one or the other to help me decide.

Call for Random Things!

The random “things” to drive either story would fit because both are steampunk.  However, please limit your description of the thing to 2 words.

These also need to be non-technology things.  It will be a Victorian Era-ish setting.  

I love hearing from you, so leave a comment — and a random non-technology thing. 

(I apologize that I will likely be slow in answering comments today. I’m taking time to go out and do errands with my friend from the next town. For an agoraphobic like me, that’s a big deal.)

  5. Hi Teagan! Looking forward with anticipation to your next serial. I voted for the skull because…you know…I’m a biker chick! But I’ll be happy either way. I have two suggestions:
    1) Beer
    2) Makeup

    In reading a little of the Victorian era, people drank beer because of the awful quality of water and society women thought makeup to be gauche as it was used mostly by prostitutes. Very interesting!

    1. Haha. I appreciate you voting, it really does help. Well, both stories are steampunk (so Victorian looking and that level of technology), so the same things will go for either. Oh, it’s definitely an interesting era.
      Yes, beer is a great thing. I’m going to use “cosmetics” because after a good deal of digging, I didn’t turn up a date for when the word makeup was first used.

  6. It’s a tough one, dear Teagan, and I don’t mind either way, although as I know that won’ t help and I have a thing for steam anything and steam boats in particular, so Delta Pearl it is. As for two objects… An ace of hearts and an ivory fan. I look forward to it, even if I might not catch up as quickly as I’d like. 🙂

    1. Haha. Yes, it’s like an amped-up tilt-a-whirl inside my head! I should have added Dramine somehow. 😉 It’s wonderful to see you, David. I hope all is well in your world.

      I’m very, very slowly settling in. At first I made great progress with my agoraphobia. Then a couple of things happened, and I’m back to square one. If you’ve ever read “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, he talks about it being over to start over — repeatedly. Well, I’m starting over again, and again. But I’m okay with that. I feel I’m in the right place.
      My body is gradually adjusting to the high altitude and extremely dry air. My emotions/mind will eventually heal.

      1. I know what you mean by continually starting over, but I sense in you that in spite of impediments such as your agoraphobia you manage to make progress toward your important goals.     1. Hi Annika, it’s great to see you. Thanks, I did. It wasn’t something I would have been able to do on my own, so I’m grateful that my friend wanted to go. I scored great “loot” at some yard sales and thrift shops. Now I have a lot of painting to do (of the loot), to be “crafty” and make it go with my home. It was a fun day.

    1. Aw GP… thank you. 🙂 But outside opinions really do help me. I have *so many* stories unfinished. Any and everything gives me a new idea. I need to live to be at least 120 to finish them all. The votes are going with the Delta Pearl. Marketing-wise I think that is probably the best for me. That way I can release both “bookized” versions of the Cornelis Drebbel stories together — if I do that serial after Delta Pearl.

  20. The truth is, I would be happy to read either story, but I voted for the Pearl because it sounds very different and I’m intrigued … and I happen to be wearing pink pearl earrings right now 😉

    1. I believe it’s very different, Joanne. Yet every time I’ve thought I was doing something utterly original, research would show similar themes or whatever. I wised up, and when I started the Delta Pearl, I didn’t go look! LOL.

  23. I’ll be happy to read either Teagan, hopefully we’ll get to do both in the fullness of time! I already left my ‘skirt lifter’ suggestion on your other post. It sounds rude haha but it’s a practical device for pinning a long skirt up out of the way when you need to!

  25. I Voted! I had a pile of “I Voted!” stickers that had accumulated in my car’s center cup holders, from every time over the past 6 years, but I threw them away when I got my new. I was thinking I needed one to stick on my computer screen.

  30. I’m too new here to be familiar with these. But a magical riverboat named The Delta Pearl makes me want to know more!! That’s my vote, and I’m sticking to it!! 🤗

    1. Oooh! Those would be terrific things for either story, Ginger. (There’s actually a diamond in a sub-plot for what I have so far for Delta Pearl. The letters would be great for Skull of the Alchemist. Now my brain might explode with two stories competing for my attention. LOL.

  31. This is such a hard choice for me, Teagan. I love Mr. Drebbel, but I also worked on a riverboat (of sorts), so I’m torn. As for two things, hmmm

    1) clock with one broken hand
    2) apple pie

    I went with Pearl.

    1. Hi Dan. Yeah… I was all set to move into Skull of the Alchemist. Meanwhile Valentina asked me about the cover I did for Delta Pearl, which made me want to go back to it. Then my “marketing brain” interrupted.

        I can imagine it’s hard to choose between these and, ahem, that other unfinished work (sorry).

        I have so many ideas in my drafts folder, and that’s for blog posts. It’s scary at times.

        1. Hi Dan. I haven’t seen the revised comment, but no worries. The first things weren’t that long. It’s as much a formatting issue as anything. Showing 3 things in the subtitles gets cumbersome when people use several words to describe them. It’s no big deal. Great big hug!
