Back on The Train

Happy weekend, everyone!  I’m still settling in at my new digs in the Land of Enchantment, painting the walls, putting furniture together, and generally keeping every muscle in my body sore. 

Crystal the cat seems to have made the adjustment. A few nights I’ve heard her making a midnight romp, and this morning, she wanted to play with her collection of bouncy and fuzzy balls!  She also insists on approving any decorating.

Coming Right Up

I’ve mentioned that San Francisco artist, poet, and activist, Rob Goldstein and I got back together with a short story for Lulu, Gramps, and the enigmatic Valentino.  I call it “One Million Years B-Lulu.”  It’s a little riff on the old movie “One Million Years BC.”

Rob has made terrific illustrations for it. He really got into the spirit of the story.  Rob will feature this short story at Sue Vincent‘s blog, but I’ll run it here as well.

Hang on — that’s not all!  I’ve started work on a mini series with blogger Dan Antion.   The core of the story was inspired by a Neil Diamond song “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show,” along with the blues legend of the devil at the crossroads and Robert Johnson. 

If you will watch the video trailer, you will have some idea of the core components of the story.  It’s a pantser tale (spontaneously written), so I don’t know too much more about it yet.

Dan was kind enough to invite me to his fictional bar for a drink at his SoCS post this weekend.  I hope you’ll click over and share some conversation with us. 

Dan’s photos will help guide my pantser pen.  He’ll also give me some random “things” to drive the story.  (Most of you are familiar with my “three things” way of writing serials.) I can tell you that the setting is rural Mississippi in the late 1950s to early 60s.  My narrator is named Birdie Devovo.  Which brings me to your invitation… 

Come out to play!

It seems like a long time since I’ve been able to involve you, the reader, in my stories.  That actually makes a lot more work for me.  However, I love including you.  Dan will be giving me photos and two random things.  So I invite you to leave one random thing in the comments. That will make the total of three things. 

The first episode will post a week from today.  All three things will be from Dan on that chapter, but after that I will start including reader “things.” 

A rather old blues song has been running around in my head.  It helped me write the mystical prologue for the story, so I’ll go ahead and share it. Be sure to leave a random “thing” in the comments.  Happy weekend!

  1. Teagan, I’m catching up with the posts I missed and this one looks like fun. First, I’m so honored to have my art on your walls. Second, that video with Dan’s images is dynamic and frames his work well. Let’s see. A thing. A traveling salvation show? Speaking in tongues?

  3. Sorry for the delayed reply. I took time off for Easter. So glad to see Crystal is settling in. Your work will be done soon, then you can join her and relax.

    Seems you have so much going on. I hate to add to your difficulty, but I want to play, too. How about I add matryoshka (wooden Russian nesting dolls) to the reader contribution list? (If I’m too late, no worries.) Hugs!

  4. HI, Teagan! It sounds like you have many wonderful things in the works. I loved the trailer for Birdie’s story, and love the time period and setting. It’s hard for me to keep up with posts that happen on the weekends, as I’m never online but I will try to play catch up if I can. Lulu’s new story at Sue’s blog sounds great too.     1. Hi Mae. I hope your week is off to a lovely start. I was just shopping for bedroom curtains… and couldn’t restrain myself when the whimsy of ruffles possessed me. Maybe it will be a nice balance to my “60s Mod” as I like to call it.

  6. Thank you Teagan. Build those muscles up doing your painting and other chores, whippping your place into shape. (I’ve been thinking about muscles because I broke my hand and can’t lift weights for a while,) And keep your imagination flowing full blast as you get settled. I’ve been thinking about you and have decided I like your lively spirit and imagination that give off sparks.

    1. Applesauce! David, I’m sorry about your hand. I broke my wrist when I had only been DC a year. For the way it immobilized me, my hand may as well have been broken too. Hang in there and keep up with the physical therapy.
      I was having stiffness problems in my hands the past six months or so. Now it’s tripled with the kind of work I’ve been doing. So I shudder to think about your broken hand…

  9. I’m intrigued. Spontaneous and random sound exciting. I listened to Neil Diamond a lot all those years ago. The most memorable line from Brother Love that is now stuck in my head is, “Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies…” As far as a random thing, bow tie just popped into my head. And spatula.

    1. Welcome, JoAnna! Now that’s the kind of random I mean. Thanks for visiting and leaving “things”.
      This began with a writing exercise I made up for myself many years ago. I’d ask friends to give me 3 random things, and I would writ until I mentioned them all. I found that I could continue, tie them from day to day to make a mystery story. So when I started blogging I asked my readers to send the “things.” I have to abandon myself to the process, and let it take the story wherever it may. Hugs!

    1. Hi Denise, it’s so good to see you. Oh! Dream catcher is a perfect thing! I research even for these pantser stories. The Choctaw were in the general area of my setting. I made a passing mention of that in the prologue… maybe that will be a factor in the story… I never know! Hugs.

  19. The trailer was terrific. I liked your drink order at Dan’s bar. I have mine on the rocks with olives but no juice and no vermouth. Best wishes on all that is going on. Your house (what I could see) looks terrific.

    1. LOL… what do they call that, John? A “Desert martini” because that’s doggone dry with no vermouth at all. 😉
      Thank you kindly about the cottage… It looks like a cyclone hit it. I’m a very messy painter. That one accidentally photographed corner of my aqua wall is the only time it’s shown up as almost the true color. The sunlight here is so intense, I haven’t been able to get good photos. I’ve always liked “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show”. You eve fit in Lucifer in Los Angeles. All the kitties send their greetings. Spunk says ¡Hola! and wants to know if you prefer red or green or if your a Christmas type?

      I think I need to make Hatch green chiles a “thing” in the story — particularly in light of my new home. 😀 :mrgreen:
      I really enjoy “Lucifer” — it’s just snarky enough. Plus I love to hear him play piano and sing. I’d like to get the soundtrack, if it was just his songs. But the entire thing is still good.

      Tee-hee! “Elvis Presley” is a perfect thing for this setting. I love it. That could actually work well with the white statutes (soldier) photo that Dan sent (briefly in the video).     I’m trying to think of a clever random thing other than “hairball” (which I cleaned up this morning) or “flying pigs” (lack of sleep, sorry), but the brain is a little blank this morning. Perhaps a regular reader of your works can help you out. 🙂
