It’s not really St. Patrick’s Day as I write this, but it is my writing day for Thistledown.  However, I’m not up to continuing the story today, so I’m taking it easy on myself to some extent.  Hopefully I can do some more editing for Atonement in Bloom.

Here’s a snippet from Atonement in Bloom.  There are a couple of new “supernaturals” in the town of Atonement, Tennessee.  This excerpt comes from the middle of the scene where Lilith the cat encounters them.  The oddly warm December night saw the calico sneaking out and following her nose to the thing she hated — magic. She watched the actions of two supernaturals for a while.  Then she realized another stranger stood behind her.  The unknown woman’s anger had grown as she observed what transpired. 


Atonement AND Bloom

…“Now to restore the balance,” the strange woman said, yet she hesitated.  “But those two tricksters have definitely earned a small lesson,” Beira the Crone added with a wink to Lilith.

Her dark green velvet cloak fell back as she extended both arms.  With the staff still grasped in her right hand she turned in a circle three times clockwise.  As she moved, the velvet cloak swirled about her ankles as if the wind moved it.  Beira’s long lapis-blue braid lifted on the same invisible currents.  Her violet eyes shone brightly in the moonlight.  On the third circle Beira tilted her head back exultantly.

The strange pillar lights faded out of the sky, and the glowing nimbus became normal wintery clouds.  Then the temperature plummeted.  Lilith instinctively fluffed out her long fur. 

This can’t be good, the calico thought.

Lilith watched in wonder as snowflakes floated to the ground.  Snow began to accumulate on the nearby stone wall.  Beira walked over to it and tilted her head as if considering.  “So it has grown here before, and spontaneously.  Ah, recently too.  This place is more interesting than I knew. Perhaps it bears further investigation,” Beira commented, rousing Lilith’s curiosity.

She gave the wall a light tap with her age darkened wooden staff.  Then she nodded once more.

Lilith’s feline ears heard an odd vibration within the stone wall, which a human would never have noticed.  In the light of the moon, the cat watched as a single rose sprouted from the top of the rock wall.  A single blue rose.

As I said, it would be nice if I could do some editing to “Bloom” today.  Although, Chris Graham (aka the Story Reading Ape) sneaked the idea for another story into my brain when he created the fun images for me.  Now I’m wishing I could also write The Chronicles of the Green Witch.  (Winks.)  So many unfinished novels… so little time.

    1. Welcome back Diana. I hope you had a fantastic break.
      I hope I can keep my self-promise to the “Bloom” out there before spring is over. Judging by the 6 inches of snow on the way, it hasn’t started yet. (Snorts.) o_O.
      I’m excited about the seires with Rob. We’ve had a ton of fun brainstorming. But now I’m worried. The last time we talked he was having a bad day, and I haven’t heard from him or seen him online since. But I’m a worry wart…

  7. I Hope you had a great St Patrick’s day. We had a great day watching the Irish Rugby team win the Six Nations tournament with a big bang, so definitely a great day for them.
    I also tried to make my hair green but didn’t use the right programme obviously.

    1. Oh, I bought a wig. :mrgreen: But darn if that silliness didn’t turn out to be the best picture I’ve taken in many years! So now I’m trying to figure out how to turn it to red. o_O

    1. Dear Janet, it’s so good to have you back (even though I look forward to seeing the artistic fruits of your vacation). You have your own hummingbird magic that always makes me feel better. Two of the things with which I struggle have doubled in the past weeks, so I will say that I’m trying at least. (One of them being different food and medicine [monthly shots] for Crystal — and that does not seem to be working out too well so far.) Maybe I should put the green wig back on! :mrgreen:

      I’m so excited to know you have “Atonement, Tennessee”! This bit is actually from the upcoming sequel. But Lilith the cat is in the first book too. Since both books are in first person, Lilith narrates the parts that the heroine can’t witness. Anyway I hope you will enjoy it. Happy St. Patrick’s Day Hugs! :mrgreen:

Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! :mrgreen: My ancestors are mostly Scottish and Cherokee (Native American), but with Scotland and Ireland so close to each other, I’m sure there’s some Irish in there somewhere. Also most of the men in my father’s family look the way I’ve heard “Black Irish” described… Who knows. Cheers, Michael!

    1. Hi Donna, I’m so happy to see you. I’ve been an editor for nearly 20 years, so I already knew “Bloom” would be a challenge — simply because of the stop-n-start writing for 4 years. I already did a massive “content edit” that went beyond normal editing. Now I’m 2/3rds done with a regular edit (a bit of moving things around, making sure everything matches after the huge edit and that’s darned tricky!), then I’ll make a (hopefully) final pass before I’m finished. Happy St. Patrick’s Day hugs right back! ☘️

  32. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Teagan! I love the sample and I’m intrigued by the possible story (although I do know about so many stories and so little time). I am afraid I have failed miserably trying to find a way to wear green hair. You know what my visual skills are like and could not find a green wig! Today it’s snowing here so I suspect not much doing… Enjoy your day and I hope you can fit some editing in! 🙂

    1. LOL… I actually just now edited something in the snippet! (There’s no end to editing until I finally “draw the line.”) I’m sorry about the snow. It’s in my forecast yet again for Monday or Tuesday… There was an influx of pouring fluffy white flakes yesterday, but thankfully a few degrees too warm for it to matter.
