Stand Up

Stand up!

Those two words can mean several different things in the dictionary.

remain/be valid, be sound, be plausible, hold water, hold up, stand questioning, survive investigation, bear examination, be verifiable

We might also stand up for a cause, like the power of a simple hug. Or we might stand up for ourselves. Andy Avis did in Episode-14 of Three Ingredients Cookbook-2, when he defied the formidable Granny Fanny.  In my  novel Atonement, TennesseeRalda Lawton stands up for herself as well as she can when faced with foes who have overwhelming magical powers.Fashion model trips

Or, sometimes we simply need to physically stand up! I’ve read several times that many people cannot get up from the floor without help — whether or not they have fallen, no matter their age or their health.  This post is not about aging. It’s about standing up, metaphorically and standing up to the challenge of well… being able to stand up.

Some of you know that I took a nasty fall down my front stairs not too long ago.  Bruised ribs and a badly sprained ankle (that I was told could take many months to heal) gave me challenges I had not experienced. That’s why I thought the following video was important enough to share with you today.

Occupational therapist, Rhonda Bonecutter provides the most impeccable “how to” I’ve ever seen. Simple solutions are demonstrated in an engaging way. See her full article in the link and take a look at the video below.

  1. I’m glad that you are feeling better, Teagan, and up to the task!
Like you I fell a few years ago and gotI wouldn’t have worsen my kne pretty badly injured. I wish I had seen this video and read the tips earlier. I agree with you when you write that for the first time you were facing challenges you had never experienced. I felt the exact same way and now feel more compassion for anyone in crutches or a wheelchair, even if it is only for a few weeks.
Stand up ovation to your health!

  2. Thanks so much Carol. It’s great to see you again.
I’m glad you liked the post. I was really impressed with Rhonda’s presentation in the video. It’s one thing to know how to do something; one thing to think you’re telling someone else how… But she did a great job bringing out little details that make a big difference.
    Hugs and happy Saturday!

  3. Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
I always remember my mother telling me to Stand up for myself… I think it depends on the circumstances especially if it is dangerous for you on anyone else… something a little different for us from Teagan Geneviene – her popular series Three Ingredients has kept us entertained for weeks – here is a stand alone post….sorry but useful advice for those who might find themselves unable to stand physically.
    Thanks Teagan

  4. Thanks very much Daniel — yes, i think i’m mending ahead of schedule.
    Centurion… tsk-tsk… you’re still just a spring flying-fire-breather. 😀
Hugs to you and Willy Nilly and yours!

  5. Teagan, this post was good for mind, body, and soul. We old Centurions often find ourselves knocked down physically and figuratively. To McGyver my way to a proud standing position is important, a victory of sorts against gravity and old injuries and ailments. But most of all, one never gets too frail to stand up for what’s right. Thank you and do hope your injuries are healing well. *Wee Dragon Hugs*

      1. Suzanne, it’s so kind of you to ask. I do get frustrated that i still have a little way to go — like yesterday i was “running” (okay so i was walking really fast) to catch a bus and after that i wasn’t the happiest camper. Still some swelling by afternoon, and a little pain from ankle and ribs. But i’m nearly there.
It’s two months now. I’ve read that this kind of sprain can take a year for full recovery. So with that in mind, i remind myself that i’m doing pretty well. Huge hugs my friend. Happy weekend. 🙂

  6. Sorry to hear about the fall. My issues are all about my back and hips…I guess that’s me getting old! I can’t sit for as long of days as I used to and work. It kills me the next day. I do need to invest in a better office chair. But I keep putting it off.

    1. Thanks so much for dropping by Mark! The boring basics (like office chairs or the shoes we wear around the house) are the best investments. They’re a huge help. I’ve abused my back far too many times over the years. There was no one to help, so i did the impossible out of pure determination. But now i’m paying the price. (Eerrr i didn’t mean for this post to turn into a list of my woes…) So i honestly relate to what you’re saying.

These “back magic” things help… but mine doesn’t help much since i don’t have the patience to use it — and i always forget before bed.

      Wishing you well!

    1. Wow Alison… I’m sorry to know you ever experienced that, but delighted that you recovered.
I’m not quite 100% (and i have lots of stairs at home (inside and outside), so i keep over-doing it. But I’m almost there. Sweet of you to ask. Huge hugs!
