There are several days to go before November breaks out in full blown NaNoWriMo. It would be against the rules for me to start writing my novel for this year’s National Novel Writing Month just yet. I have to wait until November to begin writing.
Planning and other “writerly” tasks are allowed though. Images help me plan and write. I was trying to distract myself from a monstrous headache when I had an idea for an illustration. You could call it a book cover, but it’s too early for me to commit to that. However, I hope it will help me create this urban fantasy. I uploaded it as a cover at the NaNoWriMo site, where they list everyone’s novel information. It was nice to have a picture in that little box — I didn’t have anything like that last year.
Through most of this year I thought I would do a sequel to last year’s novel, Atonement, Tennessee. I have a vague idea for that, but it just didn’t flow. Then something completely new came to me. Images of harlequins, magic, neon signs, and an old VW bus that was all lit up with letters forming the words “The Electric Zucchini.”
So there you have it…
Tatterdemallian:
The Electric Zucchini
The Tatterdemalion character is said to be one of the oldest versions of the Harlequin, dating to the 15th century. (No, that was not a typo that you may have thought you spotted. I used two different words.)
Tatterdemallian rhymes with Italian. It is an archaic spelling of “Tatterdemalion” and seemed more appropriate for the mythology I’m creating.
As for the neon signs… here ya go:
I hope this new series will provide many fun and entertaining things for me to share with you!

FYI, I’ve watched that YouTube video five times now since you encapsulated it here :D…

LOL. There is a surprising amount out there on the Boneyard. Glad you enjoyed it. I guess you can see how it captured my imagination. 🙂
It’s my understanding from a friend that the Boneyard is a sort of back lot. There is also a museum.

I meant the Billy Idol video!

LOL… my bad. But other people were curious. Hummm… maybe Billy Idol should make a cameo appearance in the novel. There is one sign of a woman in a particular style of dress (I tried to paste it here, but no luck). Maybe she could get up and dance with him! 🙂

I love how all your ideas coalesce as a set of images put together. How fun. All the best for NaNoWriMo. Looking forward to reading.

Mary,
The planning alone is huge to me this year. It would have been nice if I’d started that about 6 months ago… (But last year, I did every aspect of the story with SPEED in mind. Not so this year, and I’m feeling it big time. However, there’s about a week to go.)
Billy Idol has really given me a theme song for this year, with Rebel Yell, because I’ll WriMo; Mo-mo-mo!

Well said Shirley. I really liked your new sketch with your ancestry images coalescing too!

I look forward to joining you, after my fun at Camp NaNoWriMo this past July. It’s good to have an established, firm goal to urge me on. But I MUST clean the house first!!!

I’m just amazed at your energy and focus — to be able to do this twice in one year — heck, in less than six months! You rock PL!
Talk about NaNoWri Mo Mo Mo!

Teagan, you can be a NaNo Rebel and start your novel now. Last year I even got a Rebel Badge and proudly stuck it on my website and blog. (I think you have to already have a little rebel in ya though.) :0) Your idea sounds amazing. I like to make a photoboard, kind of like a storyboard I guess. Settings, characters, etc. for inspiration. Sounds like you have a great plan. Good luck…nano nano…over and out.

Why thank you Mary. That’s so kind of you.
I love your story board idea.
The challenge with NaNoWriMo is in the rules… So for me, I wouldn’t bother without them.
So I might say NanoWri Mo Mo Mo with a rebel yell, but that’s all. 🙂

Rules. I know. But, it helped me get my book done last year. My own Rebel year out of almost four. Still had rules though. Still had to write as many words as everyone else.
